Job summary

Selwyn District Council in Rolleston, New Zealand is seeking two experienced Building Surveyors to join our Residential Building Team. You will review and inspect residential consents, ensuring compliance with the Building Act and safe outcomes for our community.

In this highly autonomous role, you will provide expert guidance to applicants, agents and practitioners, collaborate across planning, property, plumbing and drainage, and stay current with legislative changes.

Qualifications

• NZ Diploma in Building Surveying (Level 6) or equivalent with R2/R3 competence
• Understanding Building Act, Regulations, Building Code and consent process
• Ability to make technical decisions with risk analysis and research
• High-level digital literacy and experience with software applications
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills
• Current Class 1 NZ driver''s licence

Responsibilities

• Review and inspect residential building consents across Selwyn
• Provide advice on Building Act matters to applicants and internal teams
• Communicate with agents, architects, licensed practitioners and applicants to resolve issues
• Collaborate with planning, property, plumbing, and drainage departments
• Maintain competency through audits and biannual framework
• Stay up to date with legislative changes and new systems and processes

About the role

Our team is responsible for reviewing and inspecting residential building consents across Selwyn, ensuring compliance with legislation and supporting safe building outcomes for our community.

Key aspects of each role include:

• Processing/Inspecting a wide range of building consents
• Providing advice and expertise on Building Act matters to applicants and internal teams
• Communicating with agents, architects, licensed building practitioners, and applicants — often under pressure — to solve problems and provide clear guidance
• Supporting an integrated approach to customer service by collaborating with other departments (e.g., planning, property, plumbing, and drainage)
• Maintaining competency through technical audits and our biannual competency framework
• Staying up to date with legislative changes and adapting to new systems and processes

This role is highly autonomous, but you'll be part of a supportive and collaborative team where help is always available, and your contribution is valued.

About you

Our ideal candidate is calm, honest, and approachable, with relevant Building Consent Authority (BCA) or Territorial Authority (TA) experience that enables you to hit the ground running.
You're detail-oriented but able to see the big picture, and you bring a natural problem-solving mindset to your work.

• A NZ Diploma in Building Surveying (Level 6) or equivalent NZ qualification with current R2 or R3 competence
• Understanding and application of the Building Act, Regulations, Building Code, Standards, and the consent process
• Ability to make technical decisions using sound judgement in a timely manner, risk analysis, and research
• High-level digital literacy and experience in a range of software applications
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills
• A current Class 1 New Zealand driver's licence
