About the Role

Stratford District Council is recruiting for a Building Control Officer to join the team.

As our Building Control Officer, your time will be spent both in the office and out in the field, connecting with people and solving problems. Building Control Officers assist Council in meeting its statutory obligations and policies relating to the Building Act, Building Regulations, and Building Consent Authority Accreditation Regulations. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and integrity of buildings, making it a vital part of the construction and regulatory landscape of the Stratford District.

Working in our team you will be responsible for a wide range of duties required of a Building Control Officer including:

  • Assess and process building consent applications in accordance with statutory requirements
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans and building standards
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to applicants, builders, and other stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Undertake BWoF and Swimming Pool inspections

This position is full time (40 hours per week) and is located at the Stratford District Council, Miranda Street, Stratford. The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $92,000 per annum with the appointed starting level dependent on the skills and experience of the candidate.

We are looking for someone that has:

  • Advanced knowledge of the Building Act 2004 and NZ Building Code(s)
  • High emotional intelligence and empathy.
  • Strong time management skills
  • Digital literacy and adaptability

Preference will be given to applicants who are currently, or working towards, qualifications in technical fields (or similar) that comply with Reg 18 of Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006 and have a background in building control (or a trades background with willingness to work towards one):

If you currently work in a Building Regulatory Environment (Building Consent Authority or Territorial Authority) and hold a current Competency for Building Consent Processing or Inspections, we’d particularly like to hear from you.
