Job summary

RealNZ is seeking a BI / Data Engineer to become the technical backbone of our Data Platform, building pipelines, models and a semantic layer for trusted reporting and analytics. You’ll shape our data governance and collaborate across teams, including stakeholders who may be new to data concepts.

Experience with Azure Data Factory, Snowflake, Power BI, and coding in Python/R is valued. You’ll help drive our Data and AI strategy from horizon scanning to delivery, reporting to the Head of Business

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a data engineer or BI developer with dimensional modelling and data warehousing chops.
• Advanced SQL and a good handle on pipeline and query optimisation.
• Experience building a semantic layer that translates models into business metrics.
• Solid data governance and data quality practices and the ability to communicate with non-technical stakeholders.
• Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Design and build data pipelines, data models, and a semantic layer used by reporting and analytics.
• Lead development of a scalable data platform supporting BI tools and AI features.
• Collaborate with BI analysts and SMEs to translate raw data into trusted models.
• Lend technical leadership on data governance, quality, and best practices across the stack.

We're looking for a BI / Data Engineer to become the technical backbone of our Data Platform, taking information from source right through to a business-ready state that our teams can trust, self-serve from, and build the future on.

This is a role for someone who's as comfortable in the detail of a pipeline as they are explaining what it means to a stakeholder who's never heard of dimensional modelling. You'll design and build the data pipelines, models, and semantic layer that our reporting, analytics, and emerging AI tools depend on - embedding good practice and consistent ways of working across the platform as you go. You'll also lend a hand with Power BI and analytics development, and provide technical leadership as we shape our Data and AI strategy, from horizon scanning through to delivery.

Reporting to our Head of Business Intelligence, you'll work alongside BI Analysts and subject matter experts from across the business to translate raw, real-world data into models people actually understand and trust.

What You'll Bring

• Proven experience as a data engineer or BI developer, with strong dimensional modelling and data warehousing chops
• Advanced SQL, and a good handle on pipeline and query optimisation
• Experience building and maintaining a semantic layer that turns models into business-friendly metrics
• A solid grasp of data governance and data quality practices
• The communication skills to bring non-technical people along with you
• A degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience

Experience with Azure Data Factory, Snowflake, Coalesce, Power BI, or Python/R for predictive analytics will put you ahead of the pack, but a growth mindset and a genuine curiosity for good data practice matter just as much.
