Job summary

Thales in New Zealand's Otago region seeks an experienced aviation systems engineer to support operational analysis, dataset adaptation, and system validation for real-time software-centric platforms. You will collaborate with system engineers, product owners and international clients to ensure solutions meet operational needs.

Responsibilities include contributing to FAT/SAT milestones, providing operational expertise during reviews, and mentoring teams during deployment.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Operational Analysis & Requirements Gathering

    Define Operational Concept Descriptions (OCD) and User Scenarios (UOC)Work closely with System Engineers to translate operational needs into concrete set of system requirements

    Support Product Owners and Systems Engineers in reviewing engineering designs to ensure compliance to operational needs

    Provide feedback during Sprint reviews and Product Increment (PI) demos to catch functional gaps before code deployment

    Actively Support Customer and Internal design reviews and workshops to provide operational expertise

  • Dataset Preparation & Platform Adaptation

    Build and populate operational datasets (adaptation data)Collaborate with software integration teams to automate dataset creation and validationSupport product demos

  • System Validation & Acceptability Testing

    Develop validation cases to confirm fitness for purpose of the solutionParticipate in formal milestone events, including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) alongside international clients.Actively participate in Configuration Control Boards (CCBs), to support establishing the operational impact of identified issues (Severity and Priority)

  • Training & Deployment Support

    Actively upskill and mentor the engineering teams to better appreciate the operational contextActively support system commissioning and transition activities

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Qualifications
  • Instructor grade or Air Traffic Control qualifications
Essential Experience
  • Operational Experience in TWR/APP/ACC - CAAS experience would be highly regarded
  • Strong knowledge of global civil aviation frameworks, including ICAO standards, Eurocontrol regulations, and FAA rules
  • Experience in adaptation dataset preparation
  • A positive attitude, discovery mindset, problem solving culture and motivational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Desirable:
  • Simulator Experience or Instructor experience
  • 5+ years' experience in similar positions delivering complex software-centric real-time systems.
  • Experience with Engineering tools such as DOORS, JIRA, …
  • Experience with scripting languages ( shell, bash, python, macro,…)
