Job summary

Bay of Plenty Regional Council in Tauranga, North Island, is seeking a motivated Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team in a full-time, fixed-term role for two years. You will contribute to financial reporting, asset accounting, and compliance, working with the Financial Accounting Team Lead and broader Finance team.

The role suits someone with accounting or finance experience who is detail-oriented, collaborative, and eager to learn.

Qualifications

• Experience in accounting, finance, payroll, AP/AR or bookkeeping.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Experience using financial systems and Excel.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist with asset accounting activities, including maintaining asset records and supporting valuation and reporting processes.
• Prepare and reconciling balance sheet accounts and investigating variances.
• Support month-end and year-end financial reporting requirements.
• Assist with GST, FBT and other compliance-related returns.
• Respond to financial queries from across the organisation.
• Support internal and external audit processes and responding to audit requests.
• Contribute to process improvements and maintaining strong financial controls.
• Assist with a range of accounting and reporting tasks across the Finance team.
