Job description

Some engineering problems are solved on a screen. Others need to survive movement, noise, limited bandwidth and the reality of operating offshore.

At Shearwater, we develop technology used to acquire and understand geophysical data beneath the ocean floor. Our systems bring together software, electronics, sensors, signal processing, data science and mechanical engineering, and they must perform reliably in demanding real-world condition.

For summer 2027, we are looking for two engineering students to join our Technology and Innovation Centre in Høvik, Oslo

Why Shearwater?

Plenty of companies can offer you an engineering project. At Shearwater, you will see how different technical disciplines connect to create a complete operational system.

You will join a multidisciplinary team and work on a defined technical problem linked to our technology development. Your project will be selected with your academic background, interests and skills in mind, giving you the opportunity to contribute rather than simply observe.

You will be encouraged to investigate, test ideas, share what you find and adjust your approach when the evidence points somewhere new.

What might you work on?
Depending On Your Background, Your Internship Could Involve
  • Developing or testing software used in geophysical data acquisition
  • Analysing complex data or signals using computational methods
  • Exploring algorithms, modelling or simulation
  • Working with sensors, electronics or embedded systems
  • Designing, building or testing a mechanical or electromechanical prototype
  • Investigating how technology performs outside ideal laboratory conditions

Previous interns have worked with Java, C++, MATLAB and SolidWorks, as well as prototype assembly, testing and geophysical data analysis.

We do not expect every intern to have experience across all these areas. We are more interested in how you think, how you approach technical problems and what you are keen to learn.

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applications from students in any relevant engineering or technology discipline, including:

  • Software engineering and computer science
  • Cybernetics, automation and robotics
  • Mathematics and physics
  • Electronics and embedded systems
  • Data science and signal processing
  • Mechanical and marine engineering
  • Sensor technology, geophysics and related fields

You may be a good fit if you enjoy breaking complex problems into testable parts, are curious about how systems behave in the real world and take pride in the quality of your work. You should be comfortable explaining your reasoning, listening to other perspectives and learning from an experiment that does not produce the expected result.

Experience from university projects, student organisations, competitions, part-time work or personal technical projects is relevant. We are not expecting you to arrive with years of professional experience.

Our way of working is shaped by curiosity, action, empowerment and responsibility. We value people who ask good questions, share knowledge, take ownership of their work and look for better ways to solve problems.

Practical information
  • Location: Høvik, Oslo
  • Timing: Summer 2027
  • Number of positions: Two
  • Application deadline: 30th of September 2026
  • Please include: Your CV and academic transcript. Please note: Our recruitment portal only allows one attachment per application. Please ensure that your CV/resume, cover letter, and academic transcripts are merged into a single PDF file before submitting your application.

In your application, tell us which technical areas interest you most and describe a project or problem you particularly enjoyed working on. We are interested in what you did, but also in how you approached it and what you learned.

Meet our team at Karrieredagene at NTNU in Trondheim on 10 September 2026.

Bring your questions. The difficult ones are usually the most interesting.
