Job summary

Brandon James Ltd is seeking an experienced Senior Paralegal to join a busy Regulatory team, supporting the investigation and preparation of complex Fitness to Practise and disciplinary matters. You will take ownership of cases from initial instruction through to hearing preparation, working closely with clients, witnesses, experts and Counsel, while overseeing the work of junior case support paralegals.

Qualifications

  • Prior paralegal or legal assistant experience in a law firm, regulator or similar environment.
  • Regulatory, disciplinary or Fitness to Practise work experience is desirable.
  • Experience drafting complex witness statements and managing witnesses.
  • Experience instructing experts and working with expert evidence.
  • Experience working with external Counsel and hearing preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Investigating regulatory and Fitness to Practise matters on behalf of clients.
  • Reviewing papers and evidence received on instruction.
  • Liaising with witnesses and taking detailed witness statements, including from vulnerable witnesses.
  • Drafting and preparing complex witness statements.
  • Obtaining and reviewing documentary evidence.
  • Preparing instructions to experts and reviewing expert reports.
  • Liaising with and instructing external Counsel.
  • Attending conferences with Counsel, experts, witnesses and clients.
  • Preparing comprehensive hearing bundles and supporting hearing preparation.
  • Maintaining regular communication with clients and providing progress updates.
  • Overseeing tasks undertaken by Case Support Paralegals.
  • Managing large volumes of documentation and maintaining accurate electronic files.
  • Using internal case management systems to progress matters and produce client reports.
  • Drafting correspondence, letters and emails.
  • Undertaking legal research and completing general case administration.
  • Ensuring deadlines are met and matters are progressed efficiently.

About You
  • Previous experience as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant within a law firm, regulator or similar environment.
  • Experience within regulatory, disciplinary or Fitness to Practise work is highly desirable.
  • Experience preparing complex witness statements and managing witnesses.
  • Previous experience instructing experts and working with expert evidence.
  • Experience working with external Counsel.
  • Strong understanding of hearing preparation and bundle production.
  • Excellent drafting, spelling, grammar and attention to detail.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organisation skills, particularly when managing large volumes of documentation.
  • Strong IT skills, including intermediate to advanced Word and Excel.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively to tight deadlines.
  • Confident dealing with clients and sensitive or confidential information.
  • Proactive approach with the ability to use initiative and take ownership of work.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluent English is essential.
