Job description
Overview

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) has an opening for a permanent position as a senior ocean modeler. The position is placed within the research group Oceanography and Climate, located in Bergen, Norway. The group currently counts 30 researchers, of which approximately half are part of the modelling team. The group is moving towards NEMO as the preferred ocean model for regional and basin-scale simulations. To help this transition and to strengthen the model group, we are seeking an experienced ocean modeler.

The work will be focused on developing and maintaining regional ocean numerical simulations for use in, among other things, regional climate downscaling and ecosystem modelling. The position will take on a pivotal role within the ocean modelling team in implementing NEMO as a new tool for ocean modelling activities at the institute.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain regional ocean numerical simulations for regional climate downscaling and ecosystem modelling.
  • Lead the implementation of NEMO as a new tool for ocean modelling activities at the institute.
Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree with demonstrated academic competence beyond a PhD.
  • Proven experience in ocean modelling; ability to work independently and in a team; provide a thorough overview of past ocean numerical modelling experience.
  • Programming skills with Fortran; experience with analysis tools such as MATLAB, Python or similar; familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with NEMO is strongly emphasized; strong general modelling skills are valuable, and experience with coupling ocean models to marine ecological applications is an advantage.
  • Good social, teamwork, and communication abilities; ability to generate, carry through, and publish scientific work; solid understanding of ocean dynamics and ability to interpret oceanographic data.
