Turn this role into an interview — a resume and cover letter built around what this employer wants.
Bitfocus is seeking a product-minded engineer who can own problems from concept to production, understand users, and shape practical solutions.
You’ll work across frontend and backend, applying AI judiciously while contributing to architecture, testing, and maintainability in a small distributed team.
Fluent English is required; Norwegian is a bonus. Remote-work is supported, with Oslo as a home base.
We’re looking for a product-minded engineer who can take ownership from problem to production.
You must understand how to build the right thing, not just how to build the thing right.
That means understanding our users, challenging assumptions, helping shape solutions, and having the technical ability to make them real.
You won’t just work through a predefined backlog. We expect you to ask questions like:
Once we understand the problem, we expect engineers to follow it across whatever parts of the system are necessary.
WebSockets and realtime communication are fundamental to the product, so responsiveness, synchronization, consistency, and failure recovery matter throughout the stack.
Buttons is installed and runs on our customers’ own machines.
Because we don’t control every environment, the job sometimes extends beyond normal frontend/backend development into Windows, Linux and macOS quirks, networking, processes, filesystems, permissions, upgrades, and packaging.
You do not need deep experience with every technology here.
AI is deeply integrated into how we build software. We use it for implementation, exploration, debugging, testing, refactoring, research, and understanding unfamiliar parts of the system.
It gives a very small engineering team a lot of leverage.
We’re looking for someone comfortable using AI aggressively where it helps, while still taking responsibility for the architecture, correctness, maintainability, and quality of what gets shipped.
AI can generate code. Engineering judgment still matters.
Product thinking
You want to understand why something should exist before deciding how to build it. You’re comfortable questioning requirements, exploring alternatives, and contributing to product decisions.
Full-stack ownership
You’re comfortable moving across the system rather than treating frontend, backend, infrastructure, or the runtime environment as someone else’s problem. You’ll have areas where you’re stronger; what matters is being willing to follow the problem.
Strong engineering judgment
You understand the trade-off between moving quickly and building sustainably, when to ship the pragmatic solution and when to invest in architecture, tests, or stronger abstractions.
Care for UX
Buttons controls complicated systems, often while people are operating under pressure. You should care about making that complexity manageable and about how software feels to use, not just whether it technically works.
Curiosity and the ability to learn
You’ll encounter unfamiliar technologies, operating systems, protocols, hardware, and domain concepts. We don’t expect you to arrive knowing all of them; we expect you to be good at figuring things out.
Communication and autonomy
We’re a small, distributed team. You should be comfortable working independently, communicating your thinking clearly, and sharing enough context that others don’t depend on you being online.
Fluent English is required. Norwegian is a bonus.
Experience in any of these areas is useful, but none is required:
A small, experienced engineering team
Work closely with engineers who care about their craft, challenge each other’s thinking, and are actively improving how we build software.
Interesting technical problems
Realtime state, local infrastructure, hardware integrations, cross-platform environments, UX, and enterprise reliability all meet in the same product. There aren’t many CRUD screens here.
Remote that actually means remote
Our home base is in Oslo, and we’d be happy to find someone who wants to work from the office, but it isn’t a requirement. We already have team members working fully remotely from Germany, the UK, and the US, and we’re continuing to develop the habits needed to make distributed work effective.
A team that genuinely loves what they do
You’ll join a passionate group of people who thrive on solving hard problems together.
Diverse minds, one shared drive
Our team comes from all sorts of backgrounds, from deep live-production veterans to project management, IT, travel, broadcast, straight from school and cloud specialists. You’ll be a core part of the driving force shaping where Bitfocus goes next.
High impact, low bureaucratic noise
In a small, fast-moving startup, your work is immediately visible. Your decisions directly shape both the product and how we build engineering culture.
A genuinely fun, inclusive place to build
We take our product seriously because our users operate in high-stakes live environments but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’ve built an inclusive culture made up of all kinds of personalities and backgrounds. Expect a warm, open, collaborative vibe where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work, with plenty of laughs along the way.
We make complex broadcast and AV control feel simple.
Bitfocus was founded in Oslo in 2018 by people from live production who were tired of bloated, legacy systems. Our roots are in Bitfocus Companion, our open-source control platform trusted by over 300,000 live operators worldwide. Today, we’re building Buttons: a next-generation platform that orchestrates hundreds of target systems across broadcast galleries, master control rooms, corporate events, and massive live performance spaces.
Our software connects hundreds of hardware and software systems. Our job is to take on that complexity so our users don’t have to.
We’re a small team working on Buttons. Individual ownership is high, and engineering has significant influence over both the product and how we build it.
Building great products takes more than code. It takes sharp design, clear brand strategy, deep customer understanding, and a full, multi-talented team pulling in the same direction. We operate with a true startup mindset: fast-paced, pragmatic, and focused on progress over bureaucracy.
Our customers rely on us during high-stakes live events where failure isn't an option and every second counts. That’s why we balance our startup speed with a deep commitment to craft, human-centered UX, and rock-solid system reliability. We take on the heavy technical complexity so our users can focus on what actually matters: running seamless shows.
