Job description

At Lace Lithography, we’re scaling up our team and looking for a passionate and sharp Senior Experimental Physicist to join us in Bergen.
In our company we build chip lithography technology that will enable the next 100 years of chip manufacturing. Founded in 2023, we’re based in Bergen (Norway) and Barcelona (Spain), and backed by some of the world’s most ambitious investors.
About the Role:

In our company, we develop chip patterning technology that will enable the next 100 years of chip manufacturing. Founded in 2023, we’re based in Bergen (Norway) and Barcelona (Spain), and are backed by some of the world’s most ambitious investors.

Lace Lithography is seeking a highly experienced Senior Experimental Physicist/Engineer to join and lead our Source squad. In this high‑impact role, you will combine people leadership with technical hardware skills to drive the development of our core beamline technologies. Working alongside physicists, chemists and engineers, you will be pivotal in planning, implementing and leading the activities of the squad to meet the needs of our technology roadmap.

This role is based in Bergen (Norway), and will involve regular travel between our key locations throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities:

This list is not exhaustive; additional duties may be assigned as we grow.

  • Help develop, refine and execute the company Technology Development strategy, encompassing the generation, manipulation and diagnostics of atom beams, and lead the coordination of multiple physicists and engineers to solve complex problems in this area.

  • Conceptualize, design, develop, and test complex instrumentation that can operate under high-vacuum and ultra‑high‑vacuum conditions.

  • Conduct tests and experiments to verify operational parameters of developed systems.

  • Write Python scripts to analyze experimental data, control laboratory instruments, and automate experimental setups for efficient data collection and analysis.

  • Prepare complete and high‑quality technical documentation and reports for company‑wide distribution.

  • Develop company IP by identifying solutions to problems in beam physics, vacuum architecture and atom beam diagnostics.

  • Translate company strategy into clear deliverables. Delegate tasks to junior team members that are aligned with skills and growth, address underperformance, and deliver continuous, real‑time feedback alongside formal reviews.

  • Forecast evolving technical skill gaps, give input to recruitment planning, and lead hiring, interviewing, and onboarding to ensure high technical standards, culture fit, and fast time‑to‑productivity.

Q ualifications & Experience
  • PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related technical subject.

  • At least 3 years working on instrument development in an industry or academic setting.

  • Previous experience leading technical teams on complex scientific or engineering projects (at least 2-3 years).

  • Hands‑on experience with high or ultrahigh vacuum hardware and instrumentation and deep understanding of vacuum practice and theory.

  • Demonstrable track record of delivering R&D projects from conception through to completion.

  • Experience working with molecular/atom beams and charged particle beams in academic or industrial research settings.

  • Desirable: proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, etc.).

  • Desirable: experience working with lasers and optics.
