Job description
Research scientist position, Southern Ocean – Norwegian Polar Institute

in Tromsø, Norway invites applications for a permanent research scientist position in physical oceanography, with focus on the Southern Ocean. The work will be conducted in the institute’s Research Department, Section for Oceans and Sea Ice.

Work content

The successful candidate will contribute to the institute’s oceanographic research and monitoring in the Southern Ocean, focusing on the region between Bouvet Island and the coast of Dronning Maud Land.

The main focus will be on mesoscale to regional dynamics associated with oceanic fronts, ocean-ice shelf interactions, and ocean-sea ice interactions in the Antarctic ice zone, including heat transport, meltwater processes, and carbon uptake. Topics may also include flow-topography interactions, submesoscale processes, and mixing.

The researcher will develop and conduct studies based on hydrographic data and data from oceanographic moorings. The use, incorporation, and development of new data collection technologies such as autonomous platforms (gliders, floats), remote data access systems, or optimized moored observatories are highly desirable. Use of numerical models or model output to enhance process understanding can be an asset.

Close collaboration with scientists from other disciplines is expected. Participation in polar cruises/field campaigns is also anticipated. The researcher is expected to publish in international peer-reviewed journals and seek external funding to support further research. Additionally, the researcher will contribute to environmental management advice and represent the institute in relevant international bodies.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate must hold a PhD in physical oceanography with a strong background in polar ocean processes. Experience with large datasets, water mass analysis, time series analysis, and oceanographic cruises is required. Experience analyzing features like mesoscale eddies and filaments from coast to open ocean is advantageous, as is experience with gliders, data from marine mammals, autonomous platforms, numerical modeling, and satellite data.

Proficiency in processing and analyzing CTD-data, ADCP-data, and hydrographic and current measurement time series from moored instruments is necessary. Advanced numerical skills using tools such as MATLAB are also required.

Applicants should have published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and demonstrate the ability to secure external research funding. Skills in outreach activities and science communication are valued. The candidate should be highly motivated, team-oriented, and able to work collaboratively in cross-disciplinary groups. Excellent English communication skills are mandatory; Norwegian or other Scandinavian language skills are an asset. Non-Norwegian speakers are expected to learn the language within five years.
