Job summary

About the position

We are looking for a candidate who will strengthen our research and teaching in the design and integration of sustainable ship power and energy systems. The position will be central to our research and education to support the maritime energy transition: how do we design, configure, and operate shipboard power systems that deliver the right energy from the right source, at the right time for vessels and fleets with complex operational profiles and towards a future characterized by both rapid and uncertain technology development, tightening emissions regulations and volatile market conditions.

The position will have a systems design perspective on multi-hybrid power systems, covering the selection and integration of power system components and configurations, from detailed single-line diagram level to the operational interface with fleet logistics and fuel/energy infrastructure. The research and teaching scope should cover power system engineering, operational energy modelling, data-driven methods, and decision support tools across strategic, tactical, and operational timescales.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.

Duties of the position
  • Teach relevant courses at undergraduate and graduate level, and supervise Master’s and PhD students
  • Initiate and lead national and international research projects, and contribute to existing department research programmes
  • Conduct research on hybrid ship power system design, configuration, and integration, including energy management at component, ship, port, and fleet level
  • Develop and apply data-driven and simulation-based methods, including digital twins and AI methods based on real vessel data streams
  • Model concept of operations (CONOPS) and derive operating profiles and power/energy system requirements from these
  • Contribute to research on energy accounting frameworks (well-to-wake, tank-to-wake) and their implications for system design
Requiredqualifications

For both Associated and Full Professor:

You must meet the qualifications required for the position of professor, as specified in the Norwegian regulations for appointment and promotion to teaching and research positions:

  • A doctoral degree, or competence at an equivalent level, in marine technology, maritime engineering, electrical power engineering, or a closely related field
  • Significant contributions to research at the highest international level, in accordance with standards in the field
  • Documented educational competence
  • Good communication skills and fluent in English, both oral and written
  • Norwegian language skills at level B2, or commitment to achieve this within three years of appointment

Additional requirements for full professor must be documented:

  • Quality development in own teaching and supervision over time, with a high degree of reflection on own practice, documented in a teaching portfolio
  • Broad experience with supervision, preferably at Master’s and PhD level
  • Initiative in, and leadership of, educational quality development
  • An established scientific network within relevant scientific communities demonstrated by commissions of trust, leadership and society participation

Expected competence profile:

  • Marine machinery systems design and operation, and/or marine engineering
  • Maritime electric power systems at component and system level
  • Data science methodologies and digital twins applied to maritime systems

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education level, as referenced in NTNU’s guidelines for academic positions. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language are required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level B2 of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with logistics and transportation systems modelling
  • Knowledge of alternative propulsion systems
  • Experience from naval architecture and/or vessel design teams
  • Relevant industry experience from the maritime sector
  • Competence in machine learning, AI, and/or foundation model approaches applied to engineering systems
  • Strong collaborative orientation and willingness to work across disciplinary boundaries
  • Ability to motivate and inspire both students and research colleagues
  • Innovative and analytically rigorous approach to research problems
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to engage with industry partners

Salary and conditions

As a Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 800000 – 1100000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. For appointments as a Professor (code 1013) you are normally paid from gross NOK 1000 000 – NOK 1450 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
