Job summary

Nel Hydrogen is seeking a Process/Mechanical Engineer to support stable and efficient electrode production at our highly automated facility at Herøya. You will work close to production, with a focus on welding processes, material technology, process data, and product quality.

This role can be a good fit for both candidates with relevant engineering experience and recent graduates with a strong interest in production, materials, process improvement and data-driven problem solving.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant engineering field is required or highly valued.
  • Experience with automated production and data-driven problem solving is a plus.
  • Interest in welding processes and materials technology is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follow up daily operations on an automated electrode production line focusing on welding and quality.
  • Apply materials knowledge to support stable, efficient production.
  • Use process data and ML tools to monitor, troubleshoot and drive improvements.
  • Apply Lean principles and support cross-functional improvement initiatives.
  • Train operators and contribute to HSE, quality, and KPI performance.

Job description

Do you want to help shape the future of hydrogen production? Nel Hydrogen is looking for a Process/Mechanical Engineer to support stable and efficient electrode production at our highly automated facility at Herøya. In this role, you will work close to production, with a focus on welding processes, material technology, process data, and product quality. This role can be a good fit for both candidates with relevant engineering experience and recent graduates with a strong interest in production, materials, process improvement and data-driven problem solving. Your New Role

You will be part of our Alkaline Operations team at Herøya and report to the Process Improvement Manager. In this role, you will work close to production, supporting stable and efficient electrode manufacturing while building expertise in automated production, welding processes, material technology, and process improvement. As a Process Engineer you will be responsible for critical processes in our value chain, maintaining process stability and driving improvement initiatives across production in close collaboration with Operations, Technology and Engineering teams. The role also involves applying Lean principles, supporting operators, and contributing to HSE, quality and KPI performance, with a focus on improving quality and reducing cost.

Your Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Follow up daily operations and process performance in a highly automated electrode production line, with a particular focus on welding processes and product quality
  • Apply knowledge of materials, particularly related to steel, nickel, and joining methods, to support stable and efficient production
  • Use process data, analysis tools, and machine learning methods to monitor performance, troubleshoot issues, and identify improvement opportunities
  • Apply Lean principles and support systematic improvement work across the production environment
  • Drive improvement initiatives in close collaboration with Operations, Process, Technology, and Engineering teams
  • Train and support operators to ensure process understanding and standardized ways of working
  • Contribute to HSE and quality practices, as well as department and company KPI performance
  • Support initiatives that improve quality, increase efficiency, and reduce cost
What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a some who enjoy turning production challenges into practical improvements and are curious about how data, technology, and multi-disciplinary collaboration can make processes better. You work in a structured way, take initiative, and thrive close to the production environment.

  • BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Technology, Process Engineering, or a related field
  • Relevant engineering experience is an advantage, but recent graduates with strong motivation and relevant academic background are also encouraged to apply
  • Understanding of, or interest in, automated production processes, ideally from manufacturing, process industry, or a similar industrial environment
  • Knowledge of, or curiosity to learn more about, welding processes; experience with laser or ultrasonic welding is considered an advantage
  • Understanding of materials , particularly related to steel, nickel, or joining technologies
  • Ability to work with process data and use insights to monitor, troubleshoot and improve performance
  • Proficiency in digital tools, including the practical use of data driven models and machine learning, for process monitoring, analysis and follow-up
  • Knowledge of electrolyser technology is an advantage, but most important is your motivation to build this knowledge
  • Awareness of HSE and quality practices in a production environment, or a willingness to develop in this area
  • Fluency in Norwegian and English, both written and spoken
