Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Offshore Wind

Atthe Department of Mathematics , there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within Physics-informed Machine Learning for offshore wind.

The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is associated with a recently granted Horizon Europe project where the University of Bergen is a partner.

About the project/work tasks

The project joins the forces of a consortium consisting of 9 partners from 6 different countries in the EU/EEA. It aims to provide timely and feasible solutions for offshore wind turbines, enabling to enhance their structural awareness, real-time reliability assessment, and predictive maintenance decision support through integrated sensing, modelling, and digital frameworks.

Exceptional opportunities are offered, including collaborating with leading experts in offshore wind, participating in international conferences and project meetings, and engagement in an interdisciplinary research environment. The position will expect research visits and joint activities as required and financially supported by the project. Expected starting date is January 1, 2027.

Your overall focus will be to strengthen the link between basic and applied research, a strategy of the MEGA research group led byAssociate Professor Yan Li . Your primary roles include:

  • Develop new and review data-driven surrogate models for real-time reconstruction and forward simulations.
  • Create numerical algorithms for physics reconstruction using sparse data.
  • Implement assimilation pipelines which integrate physics and surrogate models
  • Collaborate with project teams and participate in project activities

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) within Marine engineering, applied mechanics, physics, computer science or similar fields;or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Documented high-quality journal papers on relevant topics are required.
  • Documented experience with roles-related research activities is an advantage.
  • Previous research with a strong interdisciplinary focus is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department.

It is a requirement that the project is completed during the period of employment.
