Job description
Postdoctoral fellow in marine optics – Norwegian Polar Institute

The Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in marine optics in our Research Department, Section for Oceans and Sea Ice. The position has a duration of three and a half years with a possible extension for up to six months, depending on funding.

The position is part of the Norwegian national research project The Nansen Legacy (http://nansenlegacy.org). The project aims to provide a scientific knowledge base for future sustainable resource management in the transitional Barents Sea and the adjacent Arctic Basin. It is a collaborative project involving ten Norwegian institutions from 2018-2023, including activities like international cooperation and expeditions with the Norwegian ice-going research vessel Kronprins Haakon.

Initially, employment will be at the Institute of Physics and Technology at the University of Bergen for the first 1.5 years, followed by the final 2 years at the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø.

Work Content

The postdoctoral fellow will join a research group focused on quantifying changes in the light climate in the Barents Sea and adjacent areas, examining factors controlling light propagation in ice-covered and open water areas across seasons.

The candidate will analyze recent sea-ice condition changes and light climate variations using existing data and radiative transfer modelling. The project involves investigating the optical properties of water masses and sea ice from research expeditions and autonomous vehicles, which will be integrated into regional light condition models. Participation in research cruises is expected.

The work will involve collaboration with research groups from NTNU and other scientists and students involved in the Nansen Legacy project.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field, with documented proof of degree completion.

Experience in radiative transfer modelling, understanding of radiative transfer in water bodies, strong numerical and programming skills, data analysis experience, and familiarity with optical and oceanographic instrumentation are assets. Fieldwork experience is beneficial.

Applicants should have peer-reviewed publications, demonstrate good organizational and cooperative skills, and be able to work independently. Excellent English communication skills are required.

General Information

The position is based in Tromsø and Bergen, Norway, with salary according to Norwegian state salary code 1352 for postdoctoral research fellows, including a 2% pension contribution. The position is available immediately.

Research expeditions may be demanding; good health and valid health certificates are required.

The maximum duration is four years, aimed at qualifying for senior academic positions. The Norwegian State Administration promotes diversity; applications from candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged. Adjustments for health issues can be made.

Tromsø is a city of 70,000 residents known for the midnight sun, polar night, outdoor activities, and cultural events. It is a major research hub with diverse institutions and a university.
