Job description

A 3 year full-time position as PhD student is available in the research group “Laboratory of Experimental Cardiology” led by Associate Prof. Magnus Aronsen and supported by Prof. Finn Olav Levy at Department of Pharmacology, Oslo University Hospital. The group studies phosphodiesterase regulation of ion transporters and channels in cardiomyocytes, aiming to provide future therapeutic strategies for cardiac diseases.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student candidate with an interest in cardiac biology, pathophysiology and translational research. The candidate will work on projects to study potential new treatment of atrial fibrillation. The project will mainly focus on functional and imaging techniques in single cardiomyocytes in combination with vivo experiments in cardiomyocytes from normal hearts and various animal models of cardiac disease. The candidate or other group members will perform fluorescence imaging in a state-of-the-art setup, proximity ligation assay (PLA), superresolution imaging and other molecular techniques in combination with various in vivo experiments.

The candidate is expected to work with national and international collaborators, within an enthusiastic research environment that offers an exciting possibility to combine ambitious scientific projects with active career development at international level for the hired candidate.

Oslo University Hospital is a workplace with great diversity. We believe this is crucial for solving our tasks in the best possible way. We want this diversity to be reflected among the applicants for our positions, and we encourage all qualified candidates, regardless of background, to apply!

  • Master of science. Medical degree or equivalent, preferably within cardiovascular science, physiology or pharmacology
  • Experience in either fluorescence imaging, subcellular imaging (PLA), and/or experience with fluorescence imaging to measure Ca2+ and Na+ levels in single cells is a requirement.
  • Basic skills in programming languages to analyze relevant data from in vitro and in vivo experiments is a requirement, and experience with large datasets are an advantage
  • Experience with preclinical models relevant to the project and/or FELASA-certification will be an advantage
  • High ambitions of making a significant contribution to the research group and the field of cardiac research
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

The application must include:

  • An application letter stating motivation for the position
