Job summary

NTNU in Trondheim seeks a PhD Candidate to join the department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The project focuses on an AI-enabled automated platform for high-throughput cell research, integrating robotics, microfluidics, sensors, cloud computing and machine learning.

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment, contribute to drug discovery and advances toward animal-free testing, and collaborate with industrial and research partners.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field.
  • Strong academic record with average grade equal to B or better on NTNU scale.
  • Experience in robotics, mechatronics or automation projects.
  • Excellent English skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to independently conduct engineering projects.
  • Experience taking engineering systems from concept through design, manufacture, assembly, calibration and validation.

Responsibilities

  • Complete the doctoral education leading to a PhD degree.
  • Conduct high-quality research within robotics, mechatronics, and product development.
  • Design, prototype, and validate robotic and mechatronic systems for automated handling, positioning, and monitoring of biological experiments.
  • Develop integrated hardware-software solutions combining sensors, actuators, control systems, and cloud-based data acquisition.
  • Contribute to real-time monitoring and automated decision-support systems.
  • Publish results in international journals and conferences.
  • Participate in national and international research activities.
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision in relevant courses.
  • Collaborate with industrial and research partners.
