Job summary

NTNU seeks a PhD Candidate in marine macroalgae to join the Marine Sciences section at Trondheim Biological Station. You will work on restoration and monitoring of coastal macroalgae, using robotic platforms and biorefinery development in a dynamic, cross-disciplinary team.

The appointment includes collaboration with SINTEF Industry and NTNU departments. The position requires a relevant Master’s degree, strong English, and admission to NTNU’s Doctoral Programme.

Qualifications

  • Admit to NTNU's Doctoral Programme (Section 6-1)
  • Master's degree with a major independent project (≥30 ECTS)
  • Experience with in situ and lab methods to measure phytoplankton/macroalgal biomass and health
  • Strong academic record (NTNU scale, grade B or better) or documented evidence of equivalent merit
  • Excellent written and oral English skills

Responsibilities

  • Complete doctoral education up to the doctorate
  • Provide time-series of KEV and growth dynamics of macroalgae in Trondheimsfjord
  • Model habitats and growth cultures for kelp and related species
  • Combine elemental composition with ecophysiology to use macroalgae as bioindicators
  • Characterise seaweed biomass and develop sequential biorefinery products
  • Communicate with stakeholders across the cultivation value chain
  • Be prepared for changes to duties during the project period
