Research Topic

The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the research group Feminist Knowledge Production. The subject area for the position is (feminist) futures. In the ongoing shift towards green transitions, questions regarding sustainability, the environment, ecology, technology, and humanity’s footprint in the Anthropocene are central. In gender studies, these perspectives and questions concerning the future (or futures) are linked to issues of justice, redistribution, gender equality, and diversity.
This PhD position combines perspectives on climate justice and environmental sustainability within the social sciences in general, and feminist perspectives on livable futures in particular. The PhD project aims to generate new knowledges about what kinds of understandings of the future that circulate in society during our Anthropocene era. More specifically, the project will examine how the concept of "the future" is defined, maintained, and negotiated through current discourses related to sustainability and social justice. Possible approaches include:

  • Document analysis of policy documents related to sustainable development or strategic foresight, e.g., within the context of the welfare state
  • Discourse analysis of current debates and discussions in the Norwegian, Nordic, or international public sphere
  • Media analysis of media coverage, news reporting, or discourses
  • Analysis of popular culture—including film, literature, and TV—across genres ranging from documentary to science fiction
  • Empirical studies of attitudes, expectations, and narratives regarding futures, for example through interviews or surveys
  • Analyses of or with artistic expressions
  • Interdisciplinary combinations of the above suggestions or other

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master’s degree within —preferably recent—in gender studies, media studies, social sciences, or corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.
The position is open to interdisciplinary candidates interested in societal engagement regarding futures—specifically concerning relational phenomena involving place, belonging, identity, inequality, and marginalized forms of knowledge and knowledge production. It is also open to those with a particular interest in knowledge production through speculative methods, art, and storytelling.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Stavanger both the grade for your master’s thesis and the weighted average grade of your master’s degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade. If you finish your education (master’s degree) in the autumn of 2026 you are also welcome to apply.
