Job summary

Barrington James seeks an experienced AMO Experimental Physicist/Engineer to join its multidisciplinary R&D team. The role focuses on developing and optimizing advanced atomic and optical systems with high impact.

You will design, build, and refine experimental setups, analyse data, and collaborate with engineering colleagues to translate discoveries into robust technologies. Strong hands-on AMO experience is essential.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics or related with AMO focus, or Master’s with AMO experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with laser cooling, atomic physics and atom optics.
  • Extensive experience building, aligning and troubleshooting complex optical systems.
  • Experience with vacuum systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to perform feasibility studies, modelling and rapid calculations.
  • Experience using Python, MATLAB and/or LabVIEW for data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and optimise experimental setups involving laser cooling, atomic beams and specialised atomic sources.
  • Drive iterative improvement of complex beam conditioning and control systems for performance, stability and reliability.
  • Develop and implement advanced diagnostic and measurement techniques, including spectroscopy and beam profiling.
  • Work with optomechanical and CAD teams to improve design and integration of atomic physics systems.
  • Support deployment and ongoing development of advanced technical systems including knowledge sharing and training.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, design reviews and development decisions through calculations and feasibility studies.

A growing deep-tech company is seeking a highly experienced AMO Experimental Physicist / Engineer to join its multidisciplinary R&D team. This is a high-impact opportunity to play a key role in the development and optimisation of advanced atomic and optical systems.


Key Responsibilities


  • Design, build and optimise experimental setups involving laser cooling, atomic beams and specialised atomic sources.

  • Drive the iterative improvement of complex beam conditioning and control systems, with a focus on performance, stability and reliability.

  • Develop and implement advanced diagnostic and measurement techniques, including spectroscopy and beam profiling.

  • Work closely with optomechanical and CAD engineering teams to improve the design and integration of atomic physics systems.

  • Support the deployment and ongoing development of advanced technical systems, including knowledge sharing and training within the wider technical team.

  • Contribute to technical documentation, design reviews and development decisions through detailed calculations, feasibility studies and scientific evidence.


Required Qualifications


  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics or a related engineering discipline with a focus on AMO physics; alternatively, a Master’s degree in Physics or a related field combined with at least five years of relevant AMO experience.

  • Strong practical experience in laser cooling, atomic physics and atom optics.

  • Extensive hands‑on experience building, aligning and troubleshooting complex optical systems for experimental physics applications.

  • Experience working with vacuum systems.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to carry out feasibility studies, modelling and rapid calculations to guide technical development.

  • Experience using data acquisition and analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB and/or LabVIEW.
