Job description

StormGeo is looking for a Data Engineer to help us build, maintain and modernize the data pipelines that power our satellite-based solutions.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of satellite data and data engineering. You will help evolve our backend processes, improve data quality and reliability, and shape platforms that support both current products and future business needs. You will join an international, collaborative team where curiosity, clear communication and practical problem-solving are highly valued.

The position is based in Norway, with the possibility to work from either our Bergen or Oslo office. We are also open to the candidates in any Europe location within commuting distance of one of our StormGeo offices.

  • Align data platforms with business objectives, product requirements and evolving technology.
  • Develop scripts, tools and services that integrate satellite data into StormGeo products.
  • Monitor operational pipelines, troubleshoot issues and contribute to reliable 24/7 data delivery.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across engineering, meteorology, product and operations.
  • Share knowledge, contribute ideas and help create a supportive team environment.
  • Improve software quality through testing, documentation, code reviews and continuous improvement.

Core Requirements

  • A degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Geoscience or a related field—or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least three years of professional programming or data engineering experience, ideally involving large-scale satellite, environmental or geospatial data.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills.
  • Experience designing and operating data pipelines and ETL processes.
  • Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools such as Prefect, Airflow or similar.
  • Experience with UNIX/Linux systems and scripting.
  • Knowledge of satellite and geospatial data formats such as NetCDF, HDF, GeoTIFF, COG, Shapefile, GeoParquet and/or GRIB.
  • Experience with tools and libraries such as GDAL, SNAP, Xarray, Rasterio or similar.
  • Experience with Git, unit testing, automated testing and software development best practices.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • A structured, curious and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving.
  • The ability to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively and contribute positively to a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with atmospheric, oceanographic or other environmental data.
  • Experience supporting production systems or data services in an operational environment.
  • Knowledge of satellite data cataloguing, metadata standards or data discovery platforms.
  • Experience with containerization, CI/CD or infrastructure-as-code.
  • Experience with test-driven development or similar quality-focused practices.
