The University of Stavanger has a vacancy for a position as Associate Professor in Journalism and Digital Platforms at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Media and Social Sciences.

The field for this position is journalism and digital platforms. We are seeking candidates with perspectives on journalism rooted in journalism studies, media studies, social sciences, as well as the humanities.

The successful candidate will primarily teach and supervise students at the bachelor’s level, but will also have some teaching and supervision responsibilities at the master’s and PhD levels within the subject area. Furthermore, the position includes research and dissemination of research results within relevant fields at the department, as well as examination work.

The successful candidate is expected to play a key role in the development of forward‑looking journalism and media studies, and research at UiS, and will have the opportunity to contribute to developing collaboration with society, the cultural sector, and industry.

Development of varied and digital teaching methods, as well as innovation and value creation based on research results and academic development work, are also part of the position.

The workplace is in Stavanger. It is expected that the successful candidate contributes to the academic environment and is available for collaboration at the workplace during normal working hours.

We are seeking an Associate Professor with a PhD in Journalism and Digitale Plattforms, or equivalent competence documented through scientific work of similar scope and quality.

Journalistic experience and recent editorial work will be emphasized. Knowledge of digital platforms and technological changes in newsrooms, as well as the use of AI in the media industry, will also be given weight.

You must be able to document active and ongoing research and demonstrate potential for future high‑level research within the field. Extensive research in journalism studies or digital media will be emphasized.

You are expected to have a reflective and conscious approach to your teaching and supervision.

You must be able to document active, ongoing research at a high academic level and have the potential for future high‑level research in the subject area. We emphasize the quality, relevance and significance of the research work rather than the where the work is published, in accordance with the principles of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

It is expected that you have a reflective and conscious approach to your teaching andsupervision.You must have basic competence for teaching and supervision in higher education, normally documented by 200 hours of courses in university-/college teaching combined with teaching practice. If you do not meet this requirement you mustcomplete university pedagogy courses within two years from accession.

Norwegian is the main language at UiS. The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English.You must be able to teach and supervise in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at a minimum level B2. If you do not meet the requirement, you must complete Norwegian language courses to achieve this level within three years of appointment.

Courses in university pedagogy and Norwegian are offered by the university.

The following attributes are also desirable
  • experience with teaching and supervision at the bachelor’s level in journalism, and with academic administrative tasks
  • the ability to engage and involve students in teaching where learning objectives, content, and assessment are closely aligned
  • experience with and/or interest in developing and using varied teaching methods and digital tools
  • dissemination of research results in Norwegian and international publication channels that meet requirements for scientific quality
  • development and progression in research and publication, and motivation to promote open research and the intrinsic value of research
  • the ability to initiate, secure external funding for, and carry out research and development projects
  • experience of collaboration with working life/industry
  • contributed to the application of research-based knowledge in society, including results in innovation, value creation, and commercialization of research
  • the ability to build and maintain academic networks — regionally, nationally, and internationally
  • high work capacity, curiosity, and motivation to contribute to the development of academic and interdisciplinary collaboration at the university
