Job description

Develop resilient maritime positioning and sensor fusion systems, from algorithms and simulation to field trials and integration.

  • Higher education in cybernetics, computer science, or a relevant technical field
  • Foundation in estimation, signal processing, control systems, robotics, localization, or sensor fusion
  • Experience in research, product, software, or algorithm development
  • Programming experience in Python, C++, or similar
  • May require a pre-employment check and security clearance
  • Work with advanced technologies addressing real maritime challenges
  • Follow projects from early research and prototyping to operational products
  • Opportunity to shape future solutions for DP and autonomous vessel operations

At Kongsberg Discovery, we develop advanced robotics and sensor technology to map, monitor and understand ocean space. Our solutions have evolved from pioneering motion reference systems into a broad portfolio of advanced positioning and sensor fusion products used throughout the maritime industry. This development draws on decades of experience in precision positioning, motion sensing and RF sensing systems for maritime applications.

We are now expanding our capabilities in resilient maritime navigation and positioning. You will help develop positioning systems that maintain high accuracy when GNSS is unavailable, unreliable or subject to interference. You will work with sensor fusion, inertial navigation, radar positioning, passive RF sensing and terrain referenced navigation. The role spans the full development cycle, from algorithms and simulation to vessel data, field trials and integration into future solutions for Dynamic Positioning and autonomous operations.

What you will be doing

Develop concepts that provide reliable positioning when GNSS is unavailable or subject to interference.

Investigate how maritime radar, passive RF sensing, and terrain models can support vessel positioning and DP reference systems.

Develop real time sensor fusion systems using inertial navigation and complementary sensor data.

Prototype and test solutions using simulations, recorded vessel data and field trials.

Assess performance and improve robustness under realistic operating conditions.

What we’re looking for

You do not need experience in all the technologies listed below. We are looking for strong technical foundations, curiosity and the ability to learn and apply new concepts.

Higher education in cybernetics, computer science or relevant technical field.

A relevant technical background and a good foundation in areas such as estimation, signal processing, control systems, robotics, localization or sensor fusion.

Experience from research, product development, software development or algorithm development in a relevant technical field.

Experience with navigation, GNSS, inertial systems, radar, RF sensing, perception or SLAM is beneficial, but not required. We also welcome candidates with transferable experience and an interest in developing their competence in these areas.

Programming experience in Python, C++ or similar languages. Experience with embedded systems, real time systems, simulation or robotics frameworks is an advantage.

Experience from maritime operations, Dynamic Positioning, autonomous systems or other safety critical applications is an advantage.

Your strengths

Enjoy working on difficult navigation problems where the available data may be incomplete or uncertain.

Combine analytical thinking with a practical approach to prototyping and testing.

Take initiative and enjoy turning ideas into practical prototypes and tests.

Have an interest in autonomy, drones, remote operation, or other practical uses of advanced positioning technology.

Are curious and willing to take on new and unfamiliar technical areas.

Enjoy digging into problems and finding out how things work.

Pre-employment check and security clearance

This employment may require a pre-employment check procedure and security clearance in accordance with company security standards, role or site requirements. Please note that this might affect the offer process or employment.

Diversity statement

At KONGSBERG, we believe that diversity fuels innovation. We encourage you to apply, even if you do not meet every requirement. Your unique perspective is valuable to us. Your skills, attitude and perspective could be exactly what we are looking for!

You will join a team that combines advanced engineering with practical testing and a clear route from early ideas to operational products.

Work with technologies that address a real and growing challenge for the maritime industry.

See your work progress from research and prototyping to testing and product use.

Help shape future solutions for DP and autonomous vessel operations.

You will be based at Kongsberg Discovery’s Seatex office in Trondheim.
