Job description

Do you enjoy teaching working in an interdisciplinary academic environment? We invite you to join the team of teacher-scholars at University College Utrecht (UCU).As a Liberal Arts and Sciences institution, UCU brings together students with diverse academic interests and backgrounds.

Teaching takes place in small, interactive classes of no more than 28 students, allowing instructors to engage closely with students through a variety of innovative and student-centered teaching methods.

As an interdisciplinary and flexible academic teacher you will contribute to both the Political Science and Economics tracks at University College Utrecht. In this role, you will teach and supervise students across both disciplines in a stimulating Liberal Arts and Sciences environment.

Within the Political Science track, you will teach the first-year course: Political Theory, introducing students to the major traditions of Western political thought (from Plato and Machiavelli to Locke and Arendt) while also engaging with institutional, feminist, non-Western and critical perspectives. The course provides an essential foundation for students continuing in the Political Science track, while also serving students from across the Liberal Arts and Sciences programme.

Within the Economics track, you will teach the intermediate-level course:Economics of the Public Sector. This course explores political economy, public choice and public finance from a predominantly microeconomic perspective. You will also supervise Bachelor’s theses in both Political Science and Economics. Depending on teaching needs and your expertise, you may also co‑teach a qualitative research methods course, guiding students through the design and execution of an independent research project.

You are a motivated scholar with a PhD in Political Science, Economics, Political Economy, Political Philosophy or a closely related field. Your expertise bridges political science and economics, and you are able to connect classical approaches with contemporary debates. Candidates with expertise in political theory, political economy or public economics are particularly encouraged to apply.

This position is particularly suitable for early career candidates who:

  • have a PhD in the field PhD of Political Science, Economics, Political Economy, Political Philosophy or a closely related field
  • have a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO or similar) or are willing to obtain this within two years,
  • have teaching experience, where several years of experience and/or experience in multi- or interdisciplinary teaching settings is an asset;
  • are enthusiastic about teaching in a Liberal Arts and Science setting; are eager to collaborate with teachers and students outside of the field of economics and political science;
  • are fluent in English (spoken and written).

You are expected to take up the position at short notice. If you are already based in the Netherlands, or can otherwise start without significant delay, we especially encourage you to apply.

Our offer
  • a position for 3 years, with a preferred start date as soon as possible in the new academic year, preferably in September and no later than mid-October.
  • subject to programme needs and available funding, the appointment may be expanded from the second year onwards through additional teaching responsibilities.
  • a working week of 12-24 hours
  • a gross monthly salary in Scale 10 (€3.706–€5.760) or Scale 11 (€4.925–€6.682), depending on your qualifications and experience, based on a full-time appointment and in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU);
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.
