Ready to design and deliver the next generation of logistics sorting systems across Europe?

As a System Engineer (Mechatronics) at FORTNA, you will be responsible for the development of logistics sorting systems and their implementation at client sites. You will lead projects alongside the Project Manager and act as the technical lead, taking primary responsibility for the technical solution. While involved throughout all project phases, you will coordinate the technical execution of the functional design across multiple engineering disciplines. Each discipline has a Lead Engineer whom you will guide while they oversee the engineering teams.

At the start of each project, you will work closely with clients to understand operational needs and translate them into effective technical solutions. You will define the functional design, determine the technical operation of the sorting systems, and ensure compliance with safety requirements and CE marking standards. You will document designs using industry‑specific 3D modelling software and functional specifications.

You will also analyse test and acceptance results to continuously improve future system designs. This role offers a high level of variety, combining technical leadership, customer interaction, coordination and problem‑solving across multiple projects in an international environment.

Your main tasks:
  • Identify and understand customer needs at the start of projects
  • Develop functional designs and determine the technical approach for sorting systems
  • Coordinate the technical execution of designs across engineering disciplines
  • Guide Lead Engineers throughout project execution
  • Investigate and implement safety requirements, ensuring CE compliance
  • Document designs using industry‑specific 3D modelling software and functional specifications
  • Implement safety features and establish functional acceptance criteria
  • Analyse testing and acceptance results to optimise future system designs
  • Present, discuss, inspect and test systems during implementation phases
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with varying timelines
  • Maintain regular communication with clients and advise colleagues on technical matters
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the team

This role involves international travel to client sites approximately once a month.

Qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering
  • Experience working in a technical environment with exposure to mechatronics projects
  • Knowledge of logistics systems, technical developments/applications and safety standards
  • Ability to balance customer functional needs with technical quality considerations
  • Strong analytical and creative problem‑solving skills
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a dynamic project environment
  • Organised, efficient, and proactive working style
  • Fluent English language skills, both written and verbal
  • Dutch language skills are highly desirable
  • German language skills are considered an advantage
