Job summary

WD offers an internship in optics with hands-on measurements of VCSELs and photodiodes, including near-field and far-field emission pattern characterization. You will collect spectral data, follow standardized test procedures, and help correlate results with optical models while maintaining logs and creating visualization reports.

The role emphasizes safe, precise handling of optical devices, English communication, and a dynamic high-tech environment typical for WD.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in physics, electrical engineering, photonics or comparable technical field
• Fundamental optics and laser principles; data analysis in Excel, MATLAB or Python
• Safe, precise work with optical devices per safety standards
• Responsible, structured, detail-oriented and conscientious work approach
• Very good written and spoken English

Job description

• Perform optical characterization measurements on VCSEL and photodiode devices
• Measure and document near-field and far-field emission patterns using beam profilers
• Collect and analyze spectral data using optical spectrum analyzers
• Execute standardized test procedures for laser sensor module performance
• Support data correlation between measurements and existing optical models
• Maintain measurement logs and create visualization reports

• Ongoing Bachelor's or Master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, photonics or a comparable technical course of study
• Basic understanding of optics and laser principles as well as data analysis skills with Excel, MATLAB or Python
• Safe, precise work with optical devices in compliance with applicable safety standards
• Responsible, structured, detail-oriented and conscientious way of working
• Very good written and spoken English skills
• 8 - 16 hours per week / 6 months
