Job summary

Tilburg University, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, seeks a Student Assistant in Data Sciences for a research project. You will help build a longitudinal panel dataset on Dutch housing corporations (2016–2025) by retrieving financial and organizational data from AEDES, ORBIS and Nexis Lexis, and ensure data quality.

The role is 0.15 fte (6 hours per week), hybrid with Tilburg and online, ASAP start, six-month contract.

Qualifications

• enrolled as a student at Tilburg University and have completed at least 60 ECTS or are pursuing a master program.
• CEFR level English and Dutch at least B1; Dutch proficiency is a plus.
• Data processing and analysis skills with Excel, Python and R.
• Analytical, honest, proactive, independent and solution oriented.

Responsibilities

• Build a longitudinal panel dataset on Dutch housing corporations (2016–2025) by retrieving data from multiple sources.
• Check variables for relevance, completeness and comparability and document decisions.
• Design a search strategy in Nexis Lexis to retrieve news coverage, accounting for mergers and name changes.
• Carry out largely independent desk research with weekly check‑ins with the PI.

Description

Housing associations (woningcorporaties) own about 75% of the Netherlands rental homes, yet we know little about how their partnerships affect performance. This project funded by NWO (De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) is closing that gap, and you’ll help build the evidence base. As a student assistant on “Build, Baby, Build,” you’ll turn real-world data into a rigorous longitudinal dataset, sharpening your data skills while working closely with the principal investigator on a project with real academic and societal impact.

Your position

You will help build a longitudinal panel dataset on Dutch housing corporations, combining AEDES, ORBIS, and Nexis Lexis data. Concretely, you retrieve financial and organizational data for about 330 housing corporations (2016–2025), and check variables for relevance, completeness, and comparability. You also help design a search strategy in Nexis Lexis to retrieve news coverage, accounting for corporations that changed names due to mergers. Work is largely independent desk research: querying databases, cleansing data, and documenting decisions, with weekly check-ins with the PI.

Your profile

• You are enrolled as a student at Tilburg University and have obtained at least 60 ECTS in a university bachelor's program or are following a master's program.
• Minimum CEFR level [B1] English and [B1] Dutch. Proficiency in Dutch is a plus, but not a requirement.
• Data processing and analysis skills, specifically Excell, Phyton, and R.
• Analytical ability, honesty, proactivity, independence, and solution orientation.

• Salary between € 3.230 and € 3.288 gross per month for full-time employment (UFO profile Student Assistant, salary scale SA). Salary depending on the course year you are in.
• This is a vacancy for a Student Assistant who contributes to scientific education or research in accordance with Article 10.1 paragraph 2 CLA Dutch Universities. You will receive a temporary contract for the duration of 6 months.
• Vacation pay of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
• More than 8 weeks of vacation leave.
