Job summary

JnJ Surgical Vision in Groningen, Netherlands, is seeking a Staff R&D Scientist to join the IOL optics and vision science team. You will design and develop intraocular lenses and advance optical metrology, supporting testing and IP activities.

The role leads multi-disciplinary teams across Europe, collaborates with research institutes and USA groups, and aims to push medical device innovation while ensuring regulatory alignment and high-quality documentation.

Qualifications

  • PhD required with research experience in optics or vision science.
  • Prefer 5+ years in relevant R&D roles.
  • Proficient in optical design principles and simulations.
  • Strong project definition and collaboration capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in development of new concepts for medical devices from ideation to market.
  • Lead design and development of intraocular lenses and optical metrology.
  • Develop test methods and validation systems for IOLs.
  • Lead requirements development, docs, protocols and reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and research institutes.
  • Support IP strategy and evaluate external ideation.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary research teams with European institutes.
  • Coordinate with R&D groups in the USA.

Staff R&D Scientist Search

We are searching for the best talent for Staff R&D Scientist for our JnJ Surgical Vision located in Groningen, Netherlands.

Purpose

The Staff R&D Scientist is a key addition to the IOL optics and vision science team located in Groningen, The Netherlands, Europe. He/She will be responsible for R&D activities related to the design and development of intraocular lenses and will support the development of new optical metrology for testing intraocular lenses.

You Will Be Responsible For
  • Participate in the development of new concepts for unique medical devices from ideation to market phase.
  • Lead in design and development of new intraocular lenses and new optical metrology for testing intraocular lenses.
  • Develop test methods and validation systems to characterize new and existing intraocular lenses.
  • Lead requirements development, documentation of design, writing and execution of protocols and reports.
  • Participate in leading expert networks.
  • Build and maintain relationships with critical partners and notified bodies. Lead expert networks and write grant proposals.
  • Stay current with the status of competitive products, with cutting‑edge medical device industry and with technological trends to ensure innovative product design. Investigate and evaluate existing technologies.
  • Contribute to IP strategy and assess external ideation.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary research teams and will be responsible for initiating and conducting independent research tasks with European research institutes.
  • Work closely within a cross‑functional team and with research institutes and R&D groups in USA.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • PhD in Optics, Physics or Vision Science, or Mechanical Modelling
  • Preferably 5 or more years of relevant experience
  • Proficient in optical design principles, using Zemax, OSLO or other design tools to design and simulate optical systems
  • Has good level contacts regarding project and program definition
  • Demonstrated research experience and interest in technology development
Pay

The anticipated base pay range for this position is €64,000 to €103,040 on an annual basis and includes 8% holiday allowance.
