Job description

Role

Software Engineer - Battery Controller & Infrastructure

Company

iwell - Harmonizing Clean Energy

Location

Utrecht

About Iwell

At iwell, we are all about reinforcing energy security. We help European businesses become more energy independent. With growing regulations, extreme price volatility and rising grid issues, they need to be resilient. It is time to take charge and think ahead.

We deliver energy management solutions that ensure that businesses are always in control of their energy. Our in-house developed EMS and modular battery storage drive profit through sustainability, making businesses future-proof.

We are a fast-growing international team of bold, talented individuals. From engineers and software developers to creative thinkers and customer-focused business developers. No matter what your strong suit is, we always are looking for people who are determined to make a positive impact.

The Role

The Battery Controller team owns the software that is closest to the hardware: the C#.NET application that steers our battery systems and guards their safety. This is code that runs on real hardware, in the field, making real-time decisions that keep our customers' energy operations safe and reliable.

But this team owns more than the application. We also run a large share of the infrastructure that keeps the fleet operational such as Linux, Ansible orchestration, self-hosted DevOps stack, VPN gateways, networking and monitoring. We don't believe in developers who throw their code over a wall to "ops", so we're looking for someone who is two things at once: a solid C# engineer, and someone who gets a real kick out of the infrastructure side. You own things end to end, you document as you go, and you're the person your team can lean on when the plumbing needs care.

Success in this role means being able to:
  • Write and maintain safety-critical C#.NET code with the care it deserves.
  • Own infrastructure end to end
  • Support our Operations team whenever help is needed, move comfortably between application work and operational work, and see the two as one job rather than two.
What You Will Do
  • Develop and maintain the C# application that controls our battery systems and guards their safe operation. For example: designing a safety module for the Battery Controller, which helps in keeping our batteries safe and only alert the on-call operator when it is absolutely necessary, or integrating a new type of battery in our battery portfolio.
  • Take ownership of part of our infrastructure and operations. You won't do all of it, but you'll pick up an area (or a few) and run with it.
Depending on where your strengths and interest lie, the infra work could include:
  • Orchestrating our linux based fleet with Ansible and other automation tools.
  • Keeping self-hosted infrastructure healthy across Hetzner, Azure and StackHero (OS and Docker updates, DevOps pipelines, our GitLab instance, and the Mikrotik-based VPN gateway).
  • Designing, testing and documenting new on-site network setups for our Customer Operations team to install.
What Are Looking For
  • Solid experience as a C#.NET developer, writing clean, maintainable code.
  • Knowledge of hardware communication protocols such as Modbus and MQTT.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux, and a love of scripting and automating tasks away.
  • Comfort with infrastructure tooling such as Ansible, Docker, Azure and OpenVPN, and with cloud/hosting environments like Hetzner.
  • The know-how to set up a reliable and secure network, and the curiosity to keep up with the field.
  • A genuine affinity for the operational side of software — you see running the system as part of building it.
  • Strong communication skills and a habit of documenting your work. Fluency in English is required.
  • Weekly working hours of 32-40 hours
  • Coming into the office 3-4 days per week
What We Offer
  • 30 holidays per year, plus an annual company trip of 3 days
  • The opportunity to do volunteer work, by offering 1 volunteer day per year
  • Learning & Development budget of EUR 1,500 per year
  • Attractive pension plan with Brand New Day
  • Working remotely for 2 weeks per year
  • We cover your travel costs, regardless of whether you come by bike, car, or public transport.
  • A mobile phone allowance of EUR 25 per month
  • Additional activities such as a bootcamp, volleyball tournament, company drinks etc.
