Job description

Location: Hybrid / The Hague (at least three days a week)

Type: Full-time

Help us develop the leading information management platform for social sector organizations worldwide.

Our small but growing team builds ActivityInfo, a web-based information management platform supporting humanitarian relief and development assistance operations. Our platform is used in over 70+ countries by customers such as UNICEF and other UN agencies.

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled Software Engineer to join our growing team. This full-stack development position requires at least three years of professional experience in Java or similar object-oriented languages, with a focus on database systems and data processing.

You will be a key player in developing and enhancing our platform, ensuring it continues to meet the critical information management needs of humanitarian and development assistance operations globally. This role offers the opportunity to work on impactful projects within a supportive environment, complemented by a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits.

Our small, diverse, and international team prioritizes a healthy work-life balance, focusing on consistent, weekly improvements rather than high-pressure deadlines. We foster a welcoming and supportive environment for all backgrounds and identities.

Who We Are Looking For (For This Role)

We're seeking a highly independent and proactive individual who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. If you love diving into new challenges and continuously enhancing how things get done, you might be our next team member.

You'll enjoy the freedom and direct impact that comes with working in a smaller team within a scale-up company. This role is perfect for someone who's not just comfortable with uncertainty, but genuinely excited by the opportunity to learn and grow across diverse systems and technologies throughout the entire tech stack.

We're looking for someone who recognizes their strength in:

  • Autonomy & Initiative: You're a self-starter who takes ownership of your work, identifying problems and opportunities without constant oversight.
  • Continuous Learning & Adaptability: Your passion for learning new technologies and systems is evident, and you're adept at navigating and contributing across a broad tech stack.
  • Comfort with Ambiguity: You remain effective and focused even when faced with evolving requirements or less-defined paths. You see change as an opportunity, not a roadblock.
  • Team & Company Improvement: You're not just about your tasks; you actively look for ways to improve team processes, internal tools, and overall company efficiency. You're keen to contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
Your Responsibilities

In this role, you will primarily work independently, maintaining regular communication with the engineering director. You will also be part of a collaborative team where mutual support is readily available. Your work will involve both front-end and back-end projects, addressing important and often complex challenges for our users. Your work will focus on new feature developments and improvements, and also a shared responsibility in maintaining the service with e.g. bug fixes.

In your role, you would contribute to projects such as:
  • Offline Synchronization: Enhancing conflict resolution during synchronization with our offline web client to ensure robust data flow.
  • Data Analysis Pipelines: Developing automated analysis pipelines for user datasets to provide valuable insights.
  • System Performance: Optimizing the performance of our system, especially when handling large datasets.
  • Accessibility: Ensuring that key application tasks are accessible to visually impaired users.
Essential Qualifications
  • Education in computer science, engineering, or software development. We are open to candidates with equivalent real-world experience, including those from non-traditional programs or alternative career paths in software development.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience working with object-oriented programming languages such as Java.
  • Proficiency in English, as it is the primary language used for all our team communication.
Nice to haves

While not strictly required, these qualifications are beneficial:

  • Background or experience in database systems and data processing.
  • Experience using Google Cloud Platform and its services.
  • Front-end software development experience with any framework or technology.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
  • Experience mentoring colleagues.
What We Offer

The compensation package/benefits of the role:

  • A gross salary of €4000 - €5500 per month (before taxes, and including 8% vakantiegeld paid monthly), depending on experience;
  • Contribution to a pension plan
  • 25 days vacation per year.
  • Hybrid working with flexible hours / location. We would prefer to find someone who can join us physically in our office in the Hague, but will consider remote candidates with the right experience.
  • A public transport card for employees in the Netherlands for work-residence travel.
  • Time and budget for professional development.
  • An initial annual contract, with the intent to transition to a permanent arrangement upon successful performance and mutual fit.
