Job summary

Salute is a global leader in delivering Data Center services, with a strong footprint in the US and expanding across Europe. The Amsterdam-based Shift Engineer will be responsible for electrical, mechanical, and fire/life-safety systems to keep critical facilities operating with uptime above 99.999%.

This full-time role in Amsterdam requires working a 3-shift pattern including nights, reporting to the Site Manager, and coordinating with contractors for preventive maintenance and rapid response

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems.
  • MBO 2 level required.
  • LV/HV authorization to switch (NEN3140/NEN3840) and safety training.

Responsibilities

  • Perform planned and corrective maintenance on electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems.
  • Inspect equipment for defects and leaks; address issues promptly.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to guide maintenance work.

This is an exciting time to join the team as we step up operations in new countries and commence work on new and challenging projects. As a result of this growth, we are looking to recruit and develop a Data Center Engineer.

The Shift Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center is operating at peak efficiency. This involves both planned preventative maintenance of equipment, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues.

The Shift Engineer serves as a technical resource reporting to the Data Center Site Manager and third-party vendors. Data center equipment that supports mission‑critical servers must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, standby diesel generators, switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, and building automation systems.

**This position will be on a 3‑shift pattern including night shifts.**

Primary Duties:
  • Develops creative approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum, improve efficiency, and implements new strategies for Mechanical, Electrical, and Fire Life Safety systems.
  • Tests performance of electromechanical assemblies and electronic volt meters.
  • Reads blueprints, schematics, diagrams, or technical orders to determine methods and sequences of processes.
  • Inspects equipment for defects, leaks, and potential issues.
  • Installs electrical/electronic parts and hardware in housings/assemblies with hand tools.
  • Aligns, fits or assembles component parts using hand/power tools.
  • Operates, monitors, maintains, and responds to abnormal conditions in Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, Security Systems, Building Monitoring Systems, and control systems.
  • Analyze systems to ensure best practice for internal/external customers.
  • Provides feedback on effectiveness of existing standards and processes.
  • Works with contractors and consultants to review quality assurance for all system expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
  • Collaborates on the tracking and completing aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Collaborates on determining maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire life safety systems, and security systems.
  • Complete planned and ad‑hoc preventive maintenance work assignments
  • Conduct periodic inspections of building systems, i.e., HVAC, electrical distribution, maintain mechanical equipment rooms to ensure clean and safe conditions.
  • Rapid response, investigation, and management of indoor emergency situations and air quality complaints
  • Have a complete working knowledge of creating, closing, and tracking "work requests" (WR). Initiate or respond to work orders, follow‑up and verify completion of work.
  • Monitor performance/note deficiencies of service contractors and recommend changes as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
  • Completion of documentation, notification, escalation, tracking and follow up of all incidents and requests.
Skills & Experience
  • Working knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems
  • MBO 2
  • LV/HV authorized to switch Certificate (NEN3140-NEN3840)
  • Mechanical and/or Electrical training/education, with particular focus in power;
  • Must have or be able to complete Safety for Operational Supervisors training (Dutch: "Veiligheid gezondheid milieu Checklist Aannemers" Abbreviation: "VCA") and OSHA 30 shortly after start of employment.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English

The role is a full‑time position and based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and will include business travel as needed to meet business demands but will likely be nominal.
