Job description

Amsterdam

Shape a future with purpose at Arup in the Netherlands.

Engineer the resilient infrastructure that connects our communities.

Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach have set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. Celebrating 25 years of engineering excellence in the Netherlands, our Infrastructure team is at the forefront of delivering climate‑resilient and sustainable transport networks.

We take pride in shaping the nation's critical infrastructure. By joining us, you will contribute to landmark projects such as the complex replacement and renovation of the Van Brienenoordbrug, the expansion of Amsterdam Zuid station, and the replacement of the Haringvlietbrug.

The Opportunity

This is a career‑defining opportunity to take technical ownership of major civil structures—ranging from bridges and tunnels to major transport hubs. You will move beyond standard design, playing a crucial role in the recalculation, assessment, and future‑proofing of existing infrastructure to ensure it meets the demands of tomorrow.

You will have the autonomy to pioneer new digital workflows, automating complex structural analyses and pushing the boundaries of computational design. Beyond the technical challenge, you will act as a trusted advisor to our clients and a dedicated mentor to our growing team, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence across disciplines.

As a Senior Structural Engineer – Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the structural design and advanced recalculation of complex concrete structures (bridges, tunnels, stations) for high‑profile transport projects.
  • Pioneer and integrate digital workflows, leveraging automation and parametric tools to optimise structural analysis and design processes.
  • Mentor and empower junior and mid‑level engineers, guiding their technical development and sharing expertise.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams (geotechnical, road design, environmental specialists) to deliver integrated, total design solutions.
  • Advise and manage relationships with key clients, acting as a trusted technical expert on critical structural challenges.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 5+ years of proven experience in designing, assessing, or recalculating complex concrete structures within the infrastructure sector.
  • A strong interest and aptitude for new technologies, automation, and digitalisation in structural engineering and knowledge of software such as SCIA, SOFiSTiK, GSA, or Rhino‑Grasshopper.
  • Collaborative mindset with experience working effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Fluency in Dutch (minimum B2 level) is required, but we welcome applicants actively working towards this proficiency and professional proficiency in English.
