Job summary

project44 is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Visibility Platform team in Amsterdam. You’ll help shape the shared engineering foundation powering Ground, Ocean, Air, and Orders, turning billions of signals into real-time tracking, milestones, and notifications for major shippers and logistics providers.

You will design event-driven systems, own reliability and performance, and collaborate across cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure).

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional experience building large-scale real-time cloud systems.
• Strong programming and debugging skills with proficiency in Java Backend.
• Experience with high-scale systems, low latency SLAs and high availability.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve the core platforms behind visibility products — event ingestion, milestone computation, webhook and notification delivery, and shared APIs.
• Design event-driven systems that process high-throughput carrier data reliably and with low latency.
• Own reliability, performance, and scalability of the platforms your team operates.
• Build systems in a multi-cloud environment (AWS, GCP; Azure experience valued).
• Collaborate with modal engineering teams across Ground, Ocean, Air, and Orders to expose platform capabilities.

project44 is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Visibility Platform team in Amsterdam. You will help shape the shared engineering foundation that powers every one of project44's visibility products — Ground (FTL, LTL, Parcel, Rail), Ocean, Air, and Orders — turning billions of carrier signals into real-time tracking, milestones, and notifications for the world's largest shippers and logistics providers.

Key accountabilities: What you'll work on

• Build and evolve the core platforms behind every visibility product — event ingestion, milestone computation, webhook and notification delivery, scheduled work, and shared APIs used across all modal teams.
• Design event-driven systems that process high-throughput carrier data reliably and with low latency.
• Own reliability, performance, and scalability of the platforms your team operates.
• Building systems in a multi-cloud environment. We use AWS and GCP but value experience in other cloud environments such as Azure.
• Partner with modal engineering teams across Ground (FTL, LTL, Parcel, Rail), Ocean, Air, and Orders to expose platform capabilities they can build on.
• Share ownership of all facets of software delivery, including development, operations,and test.
• You will assume on-call responsibilities for systems (together with the team) that are built and owned by your team.
• You will invest in tools, monitoring, and automation to improve on-call experience for everyone on your team.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years professional experience building large scale and real time or near real time cloud systems.
• Strong programming and debugging skills, with proficiency in Java Backend.
• Demonstrated experience with systems that operate at high scale — high event throughput, tight latency SLAs, and high availability as first-class design constraints, not stretch goals.

Experience in:

• Designing and operating event-driven and stream-processing systems on Kafka or Kinesis.
• Creating and working with scalable Java-based micro-services.
• Working with databases (preferably Postgres or other SQL based DB).
• Building systems in a multi-cloud environment. We use AWS & GCP but value experience in other cloud environments such as Azure.
• Working in an agile software development environment.

Desirable and helpful (but not necessary) are experience in:

• Building shared platforms consumed by other engineering teams — API design, versioning, and backward-compatibility considerations.
• Experience with investigating large and complex codebases.
• Hands-on experience with Java.
• Creating API's/web services: REST, OpenAPI/Swagger is a plus.
• Container-orchestration: Docker & Kubernetes.
• Enjoy database related work: DynamoDB, MongoDB, Postgres.
• Observability tooling (metrics, tracing, logs) and running production systems at scale.
• Analytical approach to problem solving.
• Personal drive and maintaining a high pace — while taking responsibility for things working.
• Willingness to vocalize your ideas and pick yourself up if you get knocked down.
