To support the successful delivery of complex offshore projects, our client is looking for a highly experienced Senior Project Engineer - Ex Lead to take ownership of all Explosion Protection (Ex) compliance activities across major projects.
This is a highly specialized position requiring extensive experience within the oil and gas sector, combined with strong technical leadership and a thorough understanding of Ex compliance requirements in engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning environments.
The role:
As Senior Project Engineer - Ex Lead, you will be responsible for coordinating, managing, and assuring all Ex compliance activities throughout the project lifecycle. Acting as the focal point for explosion protection compliance, you will work closely with engineering disciplines, procurement teams, construction teams, suppliers, contractors, and project management to ensure all project deliverables meet applicable Ex regulations, standards, and project requirements.
You will play a critical role in safeguarding compliance, mitigating risk, and ensuring that Ex-related requirements are fully integrated throughout all project phases.
- Lead and manage all Ex compliance activities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide oversight and support for Ex-related activities across Engineering, Supply Chain, and Construction teams.
- Coordinate interfaces between disciplines and project phases to ensure consistent implementation of Ex requirements.
- Prepare, maintain, and issue the monthly Ex Project Matrix and Ex Dashboard, ensuring accuracy and timely reporting.
- Develop, maintain, and manage the Project Ex Assurance Plan and Project Ex Specifications.
- Collaborate with the Ex Project Data Coordinator to ensure effective tracking, reporting, and follow-up of Ex compliance activities throughout the project.
- Support Area Project Managers during contractor and shipyard bid evaluations to ensure Ex requirements are properly understood and incorporated.
- Work closely with Procurement teams to ensure suppliers comply with project-specific Ex requirements during proposal and evaluation stages.
- Ensure Ex compliance requirements are included within subcontractor contracts and associated documentation.
- Manage supplier Ex compliance surveillance activities, including quality assurance reviews and follow-up on inspection findings.
- Identify compliance gaps, deviations, and corrective actions arising from audits, inspections, and technical reviews.
- Coordinate with Construction Quality Managers and Site Ex Leads to ensure Ex requirements are effectively implemented by subcontractors and shipyards.
- Support project teams by providing technical guidance on Ex compliance, risk management, and best practices.
- Contribute to the successful delivery of projects within budget, schedule, quality, and safety objectives.
What are we looking for?
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or an equivalent technical qualification.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of Project Engineering experience within the Oil & Gas industry.
- Proven experience managing Ex compliance activities on large-scale engineering and construction projects.
- Strong understanding of Explosion Protection (Ex), hazardous area requirements, and industry compliance standards.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams in EPC or offshore project environments.
- Strong project coordination and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Experience interfacing with contractors, suppliers, yards, and quality teams.
- Proficiency with project management systems, reporting tools, and compliance tracking methodologies.

Additional Information
- Full-time position (40 hours per week).
- Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
- Hybrid working arrangement: 3 days in the office and 2 days from home.
- This position can be considered at either Project Engineer or Senior Project Engineer level, depending on experience.
- Oil & Gas industry experience is required.
- Local candidates are strongly preferred.
