The role

For the Defense Engineering & Technology organization in The Netherlands, we are looking for a Controls & Software Engineer. The Controls & Software Engineer plays a pivotal role in the development, engineering, integration and testing of autonomous unmanned systems for Defense applications. You will be part of a dedicated, multidisciplinary project team within GKN and responsible for the development of advanced control systems and embedded software. We are looking for a capable and flexible Controls & Software Engineer for the Product Engineering Department within Defense Engineering & Technology to help develop the future of defence technology and products.

In this role, you will

  • Work across the entire software development process from requirements to integration and proving, supported with effective documentation.
  • Develop embedded software, system architecture design and software-hardware integration.
  • Oversee the transition of development hardware into series production, including robustness testing and qualification testing and design certification.
  • Co-ordinate with other engineering disciplines and subject matter experts, as well as work with external and international partners.

In this role, you need

You are pro-active, self-starting, have relevant experience in Controls & Software Engineering in preferably Aerospace and have a good level of technical problem solving and you are a team player. You have worked before in a multidisciplinary environment and are familiar with Engineering and Technology Development. You are willing to learn and are able to arrange things. You will bring your passion and expertise/talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

  • Bachelor or Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • A strong background in (embedded) software engineering on complex systems, including software architecture, system level functionality, software/hardware integration and proving/verification.
  • Experience in design of Control Systems.
  • Knowledge of electronic systems, data communication, processing architecture and signal safety.
  • Familiarity with model-based design methodologies, software development cycle and systems engineering processes, including coding standards, quality and maintainability, peer reviews of code, and version control tools.
  • Experience in (embedded) software languages. In particular Standard C. Other languages (e.g. C++, Python) are desirable.
  • Knowledge of UAV, missile and complex weapons systems related technologies such as sensors, guidance, navigation, propulsion, datalinks, etc. is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Defence, Military or other aerospace standards and design assurance processes is essential.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Collaborative, open approach to development and have the ability to work well in a team (Systems Engineering, Electronics and Electrical, Test and Validation and others) and maintain momentum during development.
  • Enjoy solving technical problems that sometimes extend beyond the bounds of software only.
