Job summary

Elevation Group is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to own and optimise the Azure SQL environment behind a large-scale SaaS platform serving millions of users. You will focus on proactive improvements, not ticket-driven firefighting, shaping the data stack for today and the next years.

You will collaborate with Cloud and SRE teams, advise developers on database design, and drive cost-efficient performance, scalability and reliability across multi-tenant workloads.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years hands-on experience as a Database Administrator, Database Engineer or Database Performance Specialist.
• Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server.
• Hands-on experience with Azure SQL, preferably Azure SQL Managed Instances.
• Experience with database performance tuning, including query optimisation, execution plans and indexing.
• Knowledge of locking, concurrency and database performance in production environments.

Responsibilities

• Take technical ownership of the Azure SQL environment and continuously improve its performance and scalability.
• Analyse execution plans, query response times, locking, concurrency and other database performance issues.
• Optimise indexes and queries for high-volume API traffic.
• Identify inefficient resource usage, noisy neighbours and unnecessary Azure SQL costs.
• Improve monitoring and observability to understand which services and customers generate database load and costs.
• Manage and validate backup, restore and disaster recovery processes.
• Work with Cloud and SRE teams on high availability, security, patching and database lifecycle management.
• Advise software engineering teams on database design and help prevent technical debt within new microservices.
• Contribute to architectural decisions around multi-tenancy, sharding and event-driven architecture.
• Help engineering teams become more independent in managing their data solutions while acting as the internal database specialist.

Are you an experienced Database Engineer with deep Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL expertise? Do you enjoy solving complex performance challenges and would you like to take ownership of the database landscape behind an international SaaS platform used by more than 10 million users? Then this could be an interesting opportunity for you!

About the position

As a Senior Database Engineer, you will take technical ownership of a large and complex Azure SQL environment. Your main objective is to move database management from reactive troubleshooting towards structural and proactive optimisation.

This is therefore not a traditional, ticket-driven DBA position. Instead of simply responding when database performance deteriorates, you will analyse the complete environment and identify opportunities to improve performance, scalability, reliability and cost efficiency.

Azure SQL forms a critical part of the SaaS platform and represents a significant part of its hosting infrastructure. At the same time, the organization is modernising a long-established Java and Microsoft SQL platform towards a more cloud-native microservices architecture.

Your database expertise will therefore have a direct impact on both today's production environment and the architecture of the platform for the coming years.

Who are you?

You are a database specialist who enjoys looking beyond individual incidents. You want to understand why performance problems occur, measure their impact and implement structural improvements.

Ideally, you bring:

• At least 5 years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator, Database Engineer or Database Performance Specialist
• Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server
• Hands-on experience with Azure SQL, preferably Azure SQL Managed Instances
• Experience with database performance tuning, including query optimisation, execution plans and indexing
• Knowledge of locking, concurrency and database performance in production environments
• Experience with resource management and preferably elastic pools or multi-tenant environments
• The ability to advise developers and engineering teams on database-related architecture and design
