Job summary

Airwallex is seeking an Associate Director, Payments/Scheme Economics to own the integrity and optimization of payment costs worldwide. You will lead expert-level interpretation of card scheme rules, translate them into actionable system configurations, and drive opportunities to improve unit economics across markets.

You will partner with Product, Engineering, Finance and Commercial teams to ensure sustainable pricing and scalable cost models as the company expands globally.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in payments, acquiring, issuing, card networks or related roles.
• Deep knowledge of Visa and Mastercard interchange, scheme fees and network rules.
• Strong ability to operationalize complex payment rules into system logic and controls.
• Experience with payment cost systems and controls, including BIN-based rules and interchange tables.
• Strong analytical and quantitative capabilities with transaction-level data and economic modeling.
• Strong commercial judgment connecting payment mechanics to pricing and margins.
• Exceptional attention to detail and ownership when managing complex rules at scale.
• Strong cross-functional execution across Product, Engineering, Finance, Data, Operations and partners.

Responsibilities

• Own scheme economics and rule interpretation across fees and network rules.
• Configure cost tables and ensure accurate cost calculation and billing.
• Guard payment cost integrity with governance, testing and controls.
• Develop analytics to reveal unit economics, margin drivers and cost movements.
• Identify opportunities to improve economics via cost configuration and routing levers.
• Shape pricing and commercial decisions for new markets and product design.
• Build scalable cost engines, dashboards and automated controls with AI-enabled analytics.
• Escalate and resolve complex scheme pricing questions with payment partners.
