Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established energy company at an important stage in the development of its trading activities.

As a Power Trader, you will play a key role in building and shaping a dedicated long-term power trading capability. You will combine your market expertise with an entrepreneurial mindset, taking ownership of trading strategies, market opportunities and risk management.

This is not a role where you simply step into an established playbook. You will have the opportunity to help build the trading approach from the ground up, working closely with experienced colleagues across power trading, portfolio management, pricing and commercial activities.

Your role

As Power Trader, you will operate at the heart of the long-term power trading activities. You will analyse market fundamentals, identify trading opportunities and translate your market views into profitable positions.

Your responsibilities will include
  • Developing and executing power trading and hedging strategies.
  • Analysing power market fundamentals, price developments, forward curves and spreads to identify attractive trading opportunities.
  • Taking positions based on well-founded market views while maintaining a strong focus on risk-adjusted returns.
  • Developing and implementing hedging strategies to manage portfolio exposure and protect value.
  • Analysing seasonal and regional spreads and identifying opportunities to capture additional value.
  • Exploring cross-border trading and arbitrage opportunities, including opportunities between the Netherlands and Germany.
  • Supporting the pricing of commercial transactions and ensuring that pricing methodologies accurately reflect market conditions.
  • Monitoring positions, trading performance and risk exposure.
  • Developing frameworks that improve transparency around P&L, risk and trading performance.
  • Identifying opportunities to optimise the optionality within the energy portfolio.
  • Contributing to the development of trading tools, processes and market access.
  • Working closely with portfolio management, pricing, commercial and other internal teams to turn market insights into actionable trading decisions.
What they are looking for
  • Results-oriented and comfortable taking ownership of trading decisions.
  • Confident operating in dynamic and rapidly changing power markets.
  • Able to develop a clear trading strategy and translate it into concrete positions and actions.
  • Comfortable balancing commercial opportunities with disciplined risk management.
  • Analytical and able to combine quantitative analysis with fundamental market knowledge.
  • Entrepreneurial and motivated by the opportunity to build and improve trading activities.
  • Comfortable working independently while actively collaborating with colleagues across the organisation.
  • Able to communicate complex market views, risks and trading decisions clearly to stakeholders.
Your experience
  • Proven professional experience in power trading, ideally with a focus on long-term or forward markets.
  • A strong understanding of European power markets, including forward curves, spreads, seasonality and cross-border dynamics.
  • Demonstrable experience creating value through trading and hedging activities.
  • Strong experience working with positions, exposures and hedging strategies.
  • Experience operating within clearly defined risk management frameworks.
  • A proven ability to make commercially sound trading decisions and substantiate performance.
  • Experience developing, improving or expanding trading activities, including strategies, processes, tools or market access.
  • A strong understanding of the Dutch and broader European electricity markets.
Why this opportunity?

This role offers a combination that is difficult to find in a traditional trading position:

  • You get the infrastructure, portfolio and scale of an established energy company, while having the freedom and responsibility to help build a new power trading capability.
  • You will have a direct impact on trading strategy, processes and financial results, while working alongside experienced professionals across the wider energy value chain.
  • If you are an experienced Power Trader who enjoys taking ownership, identifying opportunities and building something new, this is an opportunity to play a significant role in shaping the next phase of an evolving energy trading organisation.
