Job summary

The University of Twente invites applications for a PhD position in Geophysics, AI, and digital twins. The role focuses on subsurface characterization by combining geophysical sensing, physical modeling, and artificial intelligence.

You will design experiments with GPR, ERT, seismic and EM methods, analyze data, and develop AI-driven solutions for monitoring subsurface processes in infrastructure and climate-related contexts.

Qualifications

• PhD in geophysics, applied geophysics, earth sciences, or related field
• Experience with geophysical sensing or imaging techniques (e.g. GPR, seismic, ERT, EM)
• Strong quantitative data analysis and scientific programming (Python, MATLAB, R)
• Strong publication record for career stage
• Excellent English scientific writing and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams

Responsibilities

• Design and conduct research using geophysical methods (GPR, ERT, seismic, EM)
• Analyze and integrate geophysical datasets to characterize subsurface structures
• Develop AI and ML methods for signal processing, image analysis, and data fusion
• Build physics-informed and hybrid AI models
• Contribute to dynamic digital twins for subsurface monitoring, forecasting, and decision support
• Collaborate with researchers and publish results in journals and at conferences
