Job summary

Delft University of Technology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to investigate thermally induced earthquakes associated with geothermal energy extraction. The project combines laboratory work, field monitoring and numerical reservoir modelling to address how reservoir cooling may trigger seismic activity.

The successful candidate will perform centroid-moment tensor inversions for small induced events, develop inversion strategies for sparse data, and link results to geothermal-induction

Qualifications

  • PhD in Geophysics or related field is required.
  • Experience linking models to field data.
  • Solid understanding of seismic wave fields and their mechanics.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and verbal English; capable of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform centroid-moment tensor inversions for small induced events (M < 1) in the Groningen area.
  • Devise an inversion strategy suited for small events and sparse seismic data.
  • Carry out centroid-moment tensor inversion for low-magnitude induced events and link results to geothermal-induction theory.
