Job description

At Refuels, we are on a mission to decarbonise Europe’s commercial transport sector and become the leading fully integrated supplier of renewable transport fuels. We operate in one of the most dynamic and challenging sectors of the energy transition. The market is constantly evolving, regulations continue to develop, and new commercial opportunities emerge every day. We do not simply follow these developments, we actively help shape them. Our focus is clear: building commercially viable solutions that accelerate the energy transition now and in the future.

Why Refuels is Different

We've grown from a small entrepreneurial biomethane business into a leading player in renewable gas, while maintaining the culture that got us here: ownership, pragmatism, and collaboration. We believe the best ideas can come from anyone, and we expect people to take initiative rather than wait for direction.

We're a lean organisation where people have a high degree of responsibility and visibility. There is little hierarchy, decisions are made quickly, and colleagues work closely across commercial, sustainability, finance, operations, and technology. As a result, individuals can influence both the direction of the business and how we work.

As we continue to grow, we're focused on building a more scalable organisation without losing the entrepreneurial mindset that defines us. We challenge each other, look for practical solutions, and believe that lasting impact comes from combining commercial success with sustainability.

About the Role

As Platform DevOps Engineer, you will help build and run the technology platform behind Refuels' business. Our business runs on systems we have largely built ourselves: market data pipelines, applications for deals and sustainability documentation, a central database and a cloud data platform, all running in Microsoft Azure. Together with the team, you will make sure this platform is reliable, secure, and ready to support a business that wants to grow significantly without growing at the same pace in people.

You will work closely with our Product Owner Engine & Platform, who sets the priorities and owns the roadmap. Where the Product Owner decides what we build and why, you focus on how it is built, deployed, and kept running. You help the Product Owner and the team understand what is technically feasible, and you explain technical choices in plain language.

This is a hands‑on role for a young professional who wants to grow. You work on the pipelines and the platform yourself, help set up how code moves to production, and act when something breaks. You develop with AI every day: Claude Code is our standard development tool, and you help build AI agents that take repetitive work out of our processes. You are also our first line of IT support in The Hague: colleagues walk up to you with questions about their laptop, phone, account, Microsoft 365, or the office network, and you make sure it gets solved, yourself or through our external IT partners. You will have plenty of room to learn and grow with the platform.

We're looking for someone with a solid technical foundation, a structured way of working, eagerness to learn, and the ability to explain technology to non-technical colleagues.

This role combines the following responsibilities:

  • Build, operate, and improve our data pipelines and integrations, the cloud platform they run on (Microsoft Azure, including its networking), and our data platform (Snowflake and PostgreSQL).
  • Automate manual transfers of data between systems, so that data is entered once and reused everywhere.
  • Help ensure that market data, deal data, and sustainability documents flow reliably between our applications and the data platform.
  • Manage access rights, costs, and licences of the platform.
DevOps, Release Management & Reliability
  • Help set up and maintain version control, automated testing, and deployment pipelines (CI/CD) for our internal applications.
  • Contribute to a test and acceptance environment so that changes are tested before they reach production.
  • Help manage our infrastructure as code (for example Bicep or Terraform), so that environments are reproducible.
  • Monitor our infrastructure, pipelines, and applications, including data quality and freshness, respond when something fails, and help make sure incidents are resolved structurally.
  • Make sure backups are in place and that restores are tested regularly.
AI Development
  • Build applications, integrations, and automations with AI coding tools, and test and review AI-generated code before it reaches production.
  • Help build AI agents and multi‑step workflows, for example to process sustainability documents and deal data.
  • Help connect AI to our data and applications through tools and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers, with the right access rights.
  • Help bring AI solutions from experiment to production in a secure and controlled way.
Security & Compliance
  • Implement and maintain technical security measures such as multi‑factor authentication, single sign‑on, patching, secrets management, and access control, working with our external IT partner on Microsoft 365.
  • Support the technical side of Cyber Essentials, the Dutch Cybersecurity Act (NIS2), external audits, and penetration tests, together with legal and our external IT partner.
  • Help handle security incidents such as phishing or compromised accounts, together with our external IT partner.
IT Support & Workplace (First Line)
  • Be the first line of IT support: laptops, phones, printers, accounts, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Handle the IT side of onboarding and offboarding together with HR, including accounts, devices, and access rights.
  • Arrange IT purchases and keep track of devices, together with finance.
  • Be the internal contact point for our managed IT provider and other partners, for device management, the office network and Wi‑Fi, licences, and second‑line support.
  • Work closely with the Product Owner, developers, and BI and data specialists as one team, and give the Product Owner input on technical feasibility and effort.
  • Document the platform, procedures, and configurations so that knowledge never depends on one person.
Qualifications we have in mind
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or a related field, with approximately 1-3 years of experience as a DevOps, cloud, platform, or data engineer, or as a system administrator.
  • We are particularly interested in candidates who want to grow into a broad technical role in a small, fast‑growing organisation.
Required Skills
  • Hands‑on experience with a cloud platform, preferably Microsoft Azure, and with Linux.
  • Working knowledge of Python, SQL, Git and GitHub, and an understanding of CI/CD.
  • Basic knowledge of networking, identities, and security measures such as multi‑factor authentication, patching, and backups.
  • Experience with, or interest in, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, supporting colleagues with office IT.
  • Hands‑on experience with AI coding assistants and LLM APIs.
  • Solid programming fundamentals: you understand, test, and can explain the code you ship, including AI‑generated code.
  • A structured way of working and eagerness to learn: you document what you do and ask for help when needed.
  • Ability to explain technical topics clearly to non‑technical colleagues.
  • Fluent in English; Dutch is a plus.
Preferred Skills
  • A Microsoft Azure certification, such as AZ-104 or AZ-401.
  • Experience with containers (Docker) or infrastructure as code, such as Terraform or Bicep.
  • Experience with agentic architecture and orchestration, agent SDKs, or MCP.
  • Completed training in building with AI, for example Claude Academy courses.
  • Interest in the energy transition, renewable energy, or trading environments.
Pay Range and Compensation Package

(Based on a 40‑hour work week & relevant experience)

  • Annual salary range of €45,000 - €55,000
  • 25 holiday days
  • Discretionary bonus
  • Daily team lunch
  • Fitness subscription at a gym or sports facility
