Home Vacancy Physician-researcher Interventional Cardiology
Apply until: 2 February 2026
Are you a motivated junior doctor with a passion for innovation and independent clinical research? Would you like to play a key role in groundbreaking cardiovascular research and work in a multidisciplinary team of leading researchers? Then one of these positions within the Department of Interventional Cardiology is the perfect opportunity for you!
What will you do?
As a physician-researcher, you will be part of an experienced research team and contribute to leading clinical-scientific research at the highest international level. You will be actively involved in the organization and execution of studies in the clinic and in the cardiac catheterization laboratories, statistical analysis of research data, and publication of results in scientific journals. The research period is designed to lead to an academic PhD degree within four years.
We have three open positions, each centered around a unique research project in which you will play a central role as a physician-researcher:
STICH 3.0-NL
A substantial proportion of patients with reduced left ventricular function also have one or more coronary artery stenoses. However, the choice of optimal treatment (type of revascularization) in this patient group is not based on high-level evidence. The UMCG has received a grant from the Dutch Heart Foundation to conduct a randomized study in which these patients are randomized to either percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
Photon-counting CT (PCCT) of the coronary arteries for planning coronary interventions
The UMCG has access to an advanced photon-counting CT scanner, allowing more accurate assessment of coronary artery stenoses. Using AI-based software, coronary interventions can be planned and performed more precisely. This is an international multicenter study investigating the added value of PCCT-guided planning of coronary interventions on clinical outcomes. The UMCG plays a leading role in this trial.
MOVIE-HFpEF
The prevalence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is increasing, yet the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this prospective mechanistic study, we investigate HFpEF patients using extensive imaging, such as MRI, and myocardial biopsies, with the aim of identifying molecular pathways and potential future therapeutic targets. This is a pioneering study into the causes of a rapidly growing disease.
Your role:
In addition, you will collaborate with a group of enthusiastic PhD candidates on patient inclusion and follow-up in interventional studies conducted at the Cardiac Catheterization Department.
During your PhD trajectory, in addition to research, you will also develop skills (such as MRI and cardiac catheterization assessments) that will be valuable throughout the rest of your clinical career.
Working environment
You will work at the Department of Cardiology of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), a dynamic department where research and clinical practice are closely intertwined. As a physician-researcher, you will join the ischemia research group within the Department of Cardiology and work on clinical studies under the supervision of national and international experts in this field.
Our international network enables you to collaborate with researchers from all over the world, and international research visits and conference attendance are a natural part of this position.
What do we ask?
What do we offer?
As a physician-researcher with an interest in cardiology, the UMCG offers you ample opportunities to pursue your interests and fully develop your talents. Moreover, if found suitable, your chances of being admitted to the cardiology residency training program are high (almost 100%!).
Your salary will be up to €5,669 gross per month (salary scale 10), depending on education and experience, based on a full-time appointment. In addition, we offer 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3% year-end bonus, and participation in the ABP pension scheme, with 70% of the premium paid by the employer. Employment conditions are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).
