Job summary

The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) at the University of Amsterdam invites applications for a PhD position within an interdisciplinary project on how vegetation traits and structure regulate below-ground microclimate and microbial carbon cycling across spatial scales.

You will use experiments, field observations, remote sensing and process-based modelling to uncover mechanisms linking vegetation, soil microbes and ecosystem carbon cycling.

Qualifications

• MSc in Natural Sciences or Engineering.
• Experience with modelling and quantitative data analysis.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Develop an interdisciplinary PhD program with a postdoc researcher.
• Conduct experiments, field observations and modelling to link vegetation traits to soil microclimate and carbon cycling.
• Publish findings in international peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences.
• Contribute to teaching and supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s students.
• Collaborate with national and international partners (ICOS).
