Job summary

TU Delft invites applications for a PhD position focused on developing and analysing process-based mathematical models to improve our understanding of sediment dynamics in hyperturbid estuaries. The PhD candidate will extend a 2DV estuarine model by incorporating new turbulence closures that capture interactions between turbulence and sediment transport.

Using analytical methods, asymptotic techniques, and numerical simulations, the research will explore turbidity maxima, fluid mud formation,

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in (Applied) Mathematics, Applied Physics or related discipline.
  • Proven experience developing mathematical models for geophysical flows and turbulence.
  • Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team; strong English communication.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and analyse process-based mathematical models to improve understanding of sediment dynamics in hyperturbid estuaries.
  • Extend an existing 2DV estuarine model by implementing novel turbulence closures that account for interactions with sediment dynamics.
  • Use analytical methods, asymptotic techniques, and numerical simulations to study turbidity maxima, fluid mud formation, and sediment retention.
  • Compare model results with observations from European estuaries to connect theory with applications.
