Job summary

Utrecht University invites applications for a four-year, full-time PhD position within an NWO-funded VIDI project on democracy and media governance in the final decades of the twentieth century. You will work in the History and Art History department, examining how social movements and alternative media challenged the postwar public media model from the 1970s onward.

The role combines archival research, critical analysis of primary sources, and cross-national study across Western Europe.

Qualifications

• MA in History or related discipline with advanced training in historical research.
• Experience with archival research and analysis of primary sources.
• Strong interest in modern and contemporary European democracy.
• Proficiency in English and at least one other European language.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Study the first phase of the challenge to the postwar model of democracy.
• Investigate how social movements and alternative media challenged public service broadcasting.
• Conduct extensive archival research and contextualise primary sources.
• Analyse cross-national comparisons on media governance since the 1970s.
