Job summary

Nederlands Lucht- en Ruimtevaartcentrum (NLR) invites applications for a PhD position in Air Traffic Management and Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance. You will design and evaluate a decentralized ATM/CNS architecture using an aeronautical ad-hoc network, with a focus on distributed algorithms and sensor-like mesh concepts.

The project is a 4-year research contract in collaboration with TU Delft Graduate School, split between Amsterdam and Delft, with potential home-working days.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Strong analytical and mathematical foundation.
• Experience in or aptitude for complex systems modelling and distributed systems.
• Proficient Python programming.
• Strong reporting and communication in English.

Responsibilities

• Design, model, and evaluate a decentralized ATM/CNS architecture.
• Determine use cases and design the aeronautical ad-hoc networking concept layer.
• Formulate distributed algorithms for traffic management functions.
• Implement models in an ATM simulation platform and stress-test scenarios.
