The Mathematical Institute (MI) of Leiden University and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) are looking for a PhD Candidate in Complex Networks to commence at the earliest possible date and no later than April 2027. The project investigates how structural properties observed in complex networks can be understood and modeled using mathematically tractable network models. The research will combine theoretical modeling with computational and data-driven investigation of real-world networks, with a particular emphasis on understanding how features such as spatial structure, clustering, heterogeneity, and connectivity shape network behavior. Possible research directions include, but are not limited to, network science, spatial network modeling, random graph models, and data-driven methods for network analysis. We welcome candidates with an interest in real-world network data as well as in developing and analyzing mathematical models of complex networks. The precise balance between theoretical, computational, and data-driven work will depend on the candidate’s background and interests. The position will be co-supervised by dr. Moritz Otto (MI) and dr. Akrati Saxena (LIACS). Michel Mandjes (MI) will act as promotor. Academic excellence is the main selection criterion.
The PhD candidate will be employed at the Mathematical Institute and also be affiliated with the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science and AI (LIACS). In particular, the candidate will become part of the Leiden AlFa (Algorithmic Fairness: https://alfa.liacs.nl ) group and the Probability research group , and collaborate closely with the Network Science group. Both the research groups and the institutes are highly international and feature a mix of disciplinary and cultural backgrounds. There are plenty of additional opportunities for other types of interaction and collaboration, for example, at the Faculty of Science through the Leiden Complex Networks Network (LCN2) and nationally through the Dutch Network Science Society. The Mathematical Institute focuses on four key research themes: Algebra, Geometry, and Number Theory; Analysis and Dynamical Systems; Probability; and Statistics and Data Science. There is extensive collaboration between these themes. For more information about the Mathematical Institute, see https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/science/mathematics . LIACS is one of the leading computer science departments in the Netherlands. We strive for excellence in a supportive institute where academic achievement, enjoyment, and diversity go hand in hand.
