Job description

We are looking for a Packaging Engineer at Abbott Olst!

About the role

As Packaging Engineer, you will be part of the regional EMEA Packaging team and based at Abbott’s Olst manufacturing site in the Netherlands. You will be responsible for the development, qualification, optimization, and technical support of packaging materials and systems used on Sterile and Oral production lines.You will work closely with cross‑functional partners including Process Optimization, Quality, Procurement, and Production, ensuring that packaging solutions are robust, compliant, and fit for purpose in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Key responsibilities
Packaging Development & Optimization
  • Evaluate, develop, and qualify packaging systems and materials in line with regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Identify and drive packaging optimizations, including cost improvements, material changes, and performance enhancements.
  • Provide troubleshooting support to production departments for packaging‑related deviations and issues.
  • Support investigations related to internal and external customer complaints involving packaging.
Technical Documentation & Compliance
  • Own and maintain packaging technical specifications and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Author, review, and maintain technical documentation, including:
  • Trial, qualification, and validation protocols
  • Reports and technical statements
  • Support audits and inspections related to packaging when required.
Projects Management
  • Identify, lead, and implement improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, sustainability, product quality, and supply continuity.
  • Support packaging‑related projects, including equipment installations and sustainability initiatives.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a regulated packaging environment such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare or food.
  • Solid knowledge of Packaging materials and technologies.
  • Regulatory and GMP requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Experience with technical documentation, validation, and risk management.
  • Good project management and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross‑functional teams within a manufacturing environment.
Languages
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written).
  • Dutch is an advantage, but not mandatory.
