Job summary

Skytree, Amsterdam-based cleantech company, seeks a Lead/Senior Mechanical Design Engineer focused on production-friendly designs and rapid industrialization. You will drive concept refinement, optimize for manufacturing, and lead designs into production with an emphasis on efficiency and build quality.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering; Master’s or PhD is an advantage.
• 10+ years of mechanical design and production/manufacturing experience.
• Experience with end-to-end product development from scratch.
• Proven ability to design complex, industrial equipment (low volume, high complexity).
• Experience in start/scale-up environments, sheet metal, CFD for gas flows and heat transfer.
• DFMA / Design for X, FEM/FEA, industrial vacuum systems, GD&T, PFD and P&ID.
• Proficient in 3D modeling tools (Inventor/ SolidWorks/ AutoCAD; Ansys, Python, Matlab a plus).
• Excellent English; Dutch a good advantage; Netherlands-based preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead conceptualization and collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements.
• Optimize designs for cost-effective production with close collaboration with manufacturing teams.
• Develop concepts and carry them to production.
• Create detailed 3D models and perform simulations to validate performance and safety.
• Integrate mechanical components into the overall product architecture with E, software, and industrial designers.
• Produce detailed design documentation and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
• Continuously learn and apply new design techniques to improve efficiency.

As we enter a new phase of growth, we are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a focus driving innovation, from new product development to industrialization.

Your role

As a Lead/Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll contribute to concept development and early-stage design, but the core of your role lies in engineering that’s deeply involved in the production side. You’ll lead the refinement and optimization of mechanical designs, guiding them through manufacturing with a focus on efficiency, reliability, and build quality.

You’ll make an impact by

• Driving conceptualization and innovation involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and contribute innovative ideas for enhancing product performance and functionality
• Optimizing design for cost-effective production by collaborating very closely with manufacturing teams and providing hands-on support throughout the manufacturing process to address any design-related issues.
• Leveraging your deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles to develop new concepts and solutions and carry them to production
• Utilizing advanced 3D modeling tools to create detailed mechanical designs and conducting simulations and analyses to validate designs for performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Collaborating and communicating design concepts across teams and stakeholders while integrating mechanical components seamlessly into the overall product architecture with electrical, software, and industrial designers.
• Creating detailed design documentation, including drawings and specifications, while ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulations, and safety requirements.
• Continuously learning about the latest advancements in mechanical engineering and design technologies, while implementing best practices and new techniques to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process.

What we’re looking for

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field; advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) is an advantage.
• Proven experience 10+ in mechanical design engineering, production / manufacturing experience is critical
• You are used to having product / module level design responsibilities, and taking ownership.
• Full product development cycle experience, including designing new and complex solutions “from scratch”.
• Expertise in designing complex, industrial equipment (low volume / high complexity).
• Experience with some of the following:
• Start/scale-up environments.
• Sheet metal.
• CFD simulations for gas flows andheat transfer.
• Heat exchangers and heat pumps.
• DFMA / Design for X.
• FEM/FEA.
• Industrial vacuum systems and challenges associated with the design of vacuum-based machinery.
• GD&T.
• PFD and P&ID’s.
• Proficiency in 3D modeling software, such as Inventor, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools.
• Proficiency with one or more other relevant tools such as Ansys (Fluent / Mechanical), PDM/PLM, Python, Matlab etc.
• Excellent communication skills in English, Dutch a good advantage.
• Candidates who are based in The Netherlands are highly preferred.
