Job summary

Capgemini Engineering is seeking a Lead Data Science Consultant to join our Data & AI team. You will engage with scientific and technical clients, translating challenging problems into practical AI/ML, manufacturing, and R&D solutions.

You’ll lead interdisciplinary projects across applied mathematics, AI/ML, and software engineering, mentoring junior colleagues. You will travel to Dutch cities, support pre‑sales activities, and translate technical challenges into comprehensible client solutions,

Qualifications

• More than 8 years of relevant work experience in R&D, Engineering, or Software.
• Solid foundation in software development or Data Science with AI/ML focus.
• Scientific or technical background with MSc/PhD in a relevant field.
• Strong experience solving complex technical problems and communicating to non-technical stakeholders.
• Passion for applied mathematics, AI/ML, scientific computing, and software engineering.
• Excellent communication to bridge technical teams and client needs.
• Willingness to mentor junior colleagues.

What you’ll be working on as a Lead Data Science Consultant

You will join our Data & AI team, a unique group that bridges the gap between cutting‑edge science and advanced technology. This team is focused on solving complex, high‑impact problems that top R&D teams in large enterprises face, particularly in industries such as life sciences, high‑tech, defense and energy transition. We work on challenges that occasionally lack blueprints, requiring innovative solutions developed in close collaboration with research teams.

In this exciting role, you will:

• Collaborate closely with scientific and technical clients to understand their unique challenges and deliver groundbreaking solutions that exceed their expectations.
• Apply your deep understanding of data science to solve real‑world problems in the fields of AI/ML, manufacturing, and R&D, while helping clients tackle some of the most critical issues of tomorrow.
• Engage in a variety of Data Science and R&D projects, where stakeholder and risk management, requirements gathering, software architectural decision making, and documentation are key aspects of your work.
• Use your strong analytical skills to translate complex technical concepts into understandable solutions for stakeholders, ensuring all project requirements are met effectively.
• Work on interdisciplinary projects that combine applied mathematics, AI/ML, and scientific computing, delivering tangible solutions that drive innovation and create real business value.

Your profile

In this position, you are expected to visit clients in different Dutch cities and industries, supporting in pre‑sales activities and translating technical challenges to practical, comprehensible solutions. To succeed in this, you should have:

• More than 8 years of relevant work experience in R&D, Engineering, or Software, including significant time in a Lead Architect role for Data & AI projects.
• A solid foundation in software development or Data Science, with specialized knowledge in AI/ML, manufacturing, or R&D.
• A scientific or technical background, ideally with an MSc or PhD in a relevant field.
• Strong experience in solving complex technical problems and the ability to communicate sophisticated concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
• A passion for working in the intersection of applied mathematics, AI/ML, scientific computing, and software engineering.
• Excellent communication skills, allowing you to bridge the gap between technical teams and client needs, ensuring effective project delivery.
• Willingness to mentor and professionally guide more junior colleagues in the team.

What we offer

Our Data & AI team, consisting of about 20 colleagues, is known for their team engagement. They highly value collaboration on projects, discussing the potential of (new) data science and software engineering topics, and on a weekly basis meeting in person in our Utrecht office.

• A gross salary between €5.500 and €6.500 per month, plus a mobility allowance of €900, a performance bonus, and 8% holiday allowance (based on a 40-hour workweek).

With over 200 colleagues, our Manufacturing & Industrial Operations department offers significant and meaningful contributions to various organisations in The Netherlands and occasionally abroad. Our projects vary tremendously, from upgrading automation systems for a vaccin production line, designing smart sensors based on IoT and cloud technology to reduce food waste, to developing predictive models to optimise warehouse logistics.
